Anna reached Casey's first the next day. It was a small family run pub not far from their house in Manchester. She and Howard had found it shortly after they had moved there. They both liked the fact that they could go there anytime and be left in peace to enjoy their meal and a drink. Anna chose a table near the back and sat watching the ducks on the lake outside.
The bell on the back door tinged, as another customer came in. She looked up and saw Howard striding his way towards her. Even now her heart flipped when she saw him. He looked stunning today, dressed in a short biker leather jacket, long legs encased in tight jeans, his hair in curls around his face. She raised her hand to acknowledge him as he caught sight of her. He came across to the table smiling cheerfully at her.
"Hi," he greeted her as he sat down at the table, picking up the drink she had ready for him. "Have you ordered anything to eat yet?"
"Didn't know how much time you'd have once you got here," she told him. "Thought I'd better wait for you."
He nodded and made his selection from the menu, the waitress taking their orders.
"Why did you need to see me then?" asked Anna as they waited for their food to arrive.
He let out a sigh and glanced at her. "Gary knows what happened at the launch?"
"Sorry?" Anna shook her head as if not understanding what he was talking about. "Gary knows what?"
"He knows what happened between us," he explained to her. "He was sitting outside the gym and heard us talking that morning."
"Oh my God!" Anna's face went pale and her hand flew to her mouth as she realised what he was talking about. "What's he going to do then?" she asked him. "Is he going to tell Jason?"
"No," Howard replied, shaking his head. "He's not going to say anything to anyone. He doesn't want any more trouble in the band. Things have just calmed down since last time."
"I'm sorry Howard," Anna said softly, "he wasn't too angry was he?"
"No, just doesn't want any upset that's all. He didn't want to see all the work we've done being wasted. And there's a tour going to be coming up in the summer. He promised me that he wasn't going to tell Jason."
Their food arrived and Howard started to eat. Anna had lost her appetite after Howard had told her his news. Most of her meal went untouched. They paid and made their way outside to the car park. Both of them having to be back in town within the half hour.
Howard walked her to her car, opening the door for her to get inside.
"Try not to worry about it, he said he wasn't going to say anything and he won't. Not if there's a danger of the band being harmed. Jason will never find out." Howard reassured her.
Anna nodded as she sat down in the driver's seat, opening the window to hear what Howard was still saying.
"There's something else as well that I have to tell you," he said, looking very serious, plunging his hands deep into his pockets and sighing. He took a small card out and handed it to her through the window.
"What's this?" she asked him, turning it over and reading it.
"The name of my solicitor. For the divorce," he said sadly.
"Oh," she gulped and stared hard at the small piece of white card.
He looked closely at her and then crouched down at the side of her car. "You still want to go through with this?" he asked her, hoping against hope that she'd say no.
