Anna looked at the clock. It had just turned two. She was going to set out soon, to meet Howard at the airport. She couldn't wait to see him again. She'd really missed him. Maisie and Chloe were going out for the afternoon but would be back by teatime. She hoped that would give her and Howard a chance to talk.
The traffic wasn't bad as it was Sunday afternoon, and she managed to park fairly close to the entrance. She went to wait in the arrivals lounge after finding out that all flights were on time that afternoon. Just after three o'clock, she spotted him with Andy as they came through the arrivals gate.
"Howard," she called out and waved to him. He looked over at her and gave a brief smile before turning to say goodbye to Andy.
"I'll be in touch later in the week then Howard," said Andy as he nodded at Anna and left them to find a taxi to take him home.
"Hi!" she said to him as she kissed him on the cheek. "Have a good flight?"
"Yeah it was ok," he said briefly as he strode through the exit, looking up and down for where she had parked.
They made their way over to the car and Anna began the drive home. Howard was very quiet as they got onto the motorway back to their part of Manchester, looking out of the window as she drove along. Anna glanced at him from time to time, not liking the silence but having to concentrate on her driving.
"You're quiet," she remarked as they got closer to home, trying to get him to talk.
"Yeah, just tired that's all. Be alright when I've had a sleep," he told her, still not looking at her.
"Well you can do that just as soon as we get in," she said, placing her hand on his leg. Howard shifted uncomfortably, not wanting to have any contact with her. She looked at him, as he kept his face turned away from her still intent on looking out of the window.
"The house will be nice and quiet when we get in. Chloe's taken Maisie out for the afternoon," she told him as he nodded to her. "You'll be able to go for a lie down if you want."
They pulled up in front of the house, Anna taking his bag into the kitchen to put the dirty clothes into the wash. She put the kettle on to make them a drink.
She turned around to him, wanting to put an end to the silence.
"I've missed you so much these last couple of days Howard. I'm sorry I didn't come with you. I left ...," she began, but Howard wasn't there. He'd gone without saying a word, going into the study to see if he'd any emails.
Anna felt the tears pricking the back of her eyes as she made their drinks. She hated it when he was like this. He was still mad with her she could tell and that was why he was doing it. She'd give him time to calm down and then they would have to talk. They couldn't carry on like this. And the rest of the band were coming over later to have a few drinks with them for his birthday. They'd send out for a curry when they were all there.
His drink made, she picked it up and took it and his phone to him in the study.
As she walked in he was still answering a couple of the emails he'd received while he'd been away. She placed his drink down at the side of him.
"Here's your drink and your phone. You had quite a few calls on it while you were away. Think Jason and Gary have left a couple, you'll have to check them out."
He muttered his thanks to her, not taking his eyes from the computer screen. Anna looked at him and went back to the kitchen to collect some towels to take upstairs to their bathroom, leaving him alone to check his calls.
