Anna shook her head, not believing that she had heard him correctly. She was speechless as she gazed at him.
"I mean it Anna, I want us to be together again. I still think that we can make this work," he told her, leaning over to kiss her.
Anna turned her face away to avoid his kiss, not knowing what to say to him. All the feelings she had for him were still there, but she still couldn't do as he wanted.
"I can't How, I'm sorry," she whispered to him, pulling her dress up to cover herself. "I just can't."
There was silence in the car, broken only by the sound of water dripping from the trees onto the roof. The storm had blown over, the rain had stopped.
Howard was determined not to give up just yet. "Look, I'll come with you to Jason, we'll tell him together," he persisted. He took hold of her hand. "I won't let you face him alone, I'll be there with you."
Anna felt as if she were outside herself, not really taking part in the conversation. She glanced at him as he sat looking so serious and earnest at the side of her. He really did mean this. He did still love her.
"No Howard, I can't do it, I'm sorry!" she told him as she tried to zip her dress back up again.
"Why not?" he asked as he quickly dressed. "We've just made love. I know you still love me like you've always done. Why can't you come back to me?"
"It's over Howard, we had our chance and we couldn't make it work," she said, pulling her shoes on. She moved along to the end of the seat and got out of the car. Howard jumped out, pulling his jacket back on. He ran around the car and caught hold of her arm, stopping her.
"Anna please listen to me," he pleaded with her. "We can do this, I know we can. I want you back with me."
"No Howard, it's too late," she replied as coolly as she could, trying hard to remain in control of herself. "I'm with Jason now."
"Huh, you've remembered him have you? You seemed to have forgotten all about him when you were begging me to fuck you some more," he said bitterly.
Anna spun around angrily, raised her hand and slapped him hard in the face.
"Don't you dare!" she cried at him. "You forgot him as well. He's meant to be one of your best friends. It didn't stop you did it?" She stood panting with rage, her hands on her hips.
"You still want your divorce? Well you can have it. I'll choose a solicitor as soon as I get home. Get it over and done with. What's the point of hanging about anymore if you're so convinced that it's over?" He looked at his watch and smiled. "Happy anniversary darlin'! October 29th! We made it to twelve months! And they said it wouldn't last!" he said bitterly, turning and walking back to the hotel.
It was their wedding anniversary! Anna stared after him, stunned at his reaction. She watched him disappear into the darkness, then followed him down the path, tears once again running down her face.
As soon as she got back into the hotel, she went to the ladies room and tidied herself up. She looked at her reflection in the mirror, sure that she would see some sign of having been unfaithful to Jason, but she just looked the same. She never thought that she was capable of doing that. A wave of nausea came over her and she clutched the edge of the basin to steady herself. She had always thought that she'd be stronger than that. That she'd be able to resist any temptation that came her way. Jason didn't deserve this. He'd never hurt her and never would. Her mind was in a whirl and her head was starting to ache.
