You prepare to make the final blow to the hilichurl that attacked you, when you suddenly hear a loud crack.
Before you can react, something between you two blows up and you are thrown against the rocks behind you.
After you get up, the first thing you realise is that the hilichurl didn't have as much of a luck as you. But then, you glance at the ground, where lies the reason behind the explosion.
"Shit!" You curse, quickly making your way to the item before you, "Shit, shit, shit!"
The thing isn't anything other than your sword.
The Festering Desire, now cracked and with some bits missing.

You stop before the entrance to cave of your favorite alchemist. Getting back to him as quickly as you possibly could sounded like the best idea in this situation, but you suddenly aren't so sure about it.
You look at the cracked sword in your hand again, now giving more attention to the damage.
The blade is filled with cracks and with some bits around the edge missing.
You made sure to pick up every missing piece, so it isn't like Fatuis can find something, right?
You decide to slowly inhale and then walk into the cave, in which you can see Albedo working on something on his desk.
"Hi Y/N, I didn't expect to see you so.." He turns around to properly greet you, but his eyes quickly fall to the sword you have in hand.
"What is that?"
"I don't know! I was fighting against one hilichurl and then I suddenly heard a loud crack and-" You try to explain, but Albedo raises his hand, stopping you.
"You suddenly heard a crack? Just like that?"
"Yes! And then there was a big explosion that throwed me-"
"So you're saying the sword just cracked and exploded by itself. The same sword that absorbs the strength of your enemies broke itself?" His voice nor the face haven't changed, yet you can feel his anger and his doubts about the events that happened to you.
"Albedo listen, it really isn't my fault that-"
"No, you're right. It's my fault I've ever believed you enough to entrust you the sword."
You just stare at him in shock before the words sink in.
You didn't know what hurt more - the words or the cold stare he was giving you.
"I'm sorry." Is all you're able to say before placing the bag of sword's missing bits on his desk and turning around to leave this place.
"Y/N, wait-" He tries to grab your hand, to which you yank it from him and run outside.

When you're sure you're too far away, you finally let the tears flow freely, without a care in the world.

Saying that Albedo was cursing himself would be an understatement. Since the words left his mouth he was already full of regrets.
He pinched the root of his nose and closed his eyes.
The reason behind the explosion was apparent from the very beginning, he himself even said that much!
'The same sword that absorbs the strength of your enemies'
Of course there has to be a point where there's just too much energy for the sword to take.
Everything has it's limits, it wouldn't make sense for it to be the exception.
Albedo wanted nothing more than just bury his face in his hands and dwell on his past actions, but he thought better of it.
It's already getting dark, and now the top priority is finding Y/N.

It doesn't take much time for you to realise you won't be able to get to Monstadt safely at this hour.
Luckily, Dragonspine is full of deserted tents, some of them still having sleeping bags.
You decide to spend the night in one of the tents once belonging to Joel's father, when you suddenly hear a footsteps.
You quickly turn around, ready to fight for your life, when you see someone you didn't expect.
"Y/N, please listen."
You're already leaving, when Albedo calls out.
"I'm terribly sorry for everything I said back there."
This was the first time you've heard so much sadness in his voice. You stop again and look at him.
His eyes usually so bright are now full of regrets. Seeing him like this makes you want to hug him, if it wasn't for the thing that happened.
"I already figured out the reason behind the explosion." He continues, taking the fact you're looking at him again as a good sign.
You decide to go back near the tent to listen to him.
"I gave you the task to defeat as many enemies as you possibly can, so the sword could absorb their energy. The sword destroyed itself because it went over it's limit."
You couldn't believe it.
"So, does that mean-"
"Yes," He agrees with a sigh, "You did an amazing job. I can't even begin to imagine what things have you done, just to get to this point. Believing you was the smartest decision I've ever made."
And just like that, you start crying again. Before he can even react, you pull him into a hug, the fight already forgotten.
