Chapter 27
Joe

Julia was so shocked she could barely move. I grabbed her arm and half dragged, half guided her to to safety behind the brick wall and out of the sight of the shooter. I hope. I looked around to make sure everyone had made it behind the wall. Julia, Tony, Shelby, max, and my dad. Everyone was here, but who was shot? I was so worried about everyone I knew getting to safety, I hadn't seen who was hurt. I knew there would be more than one person down because there was more than one shot fired. I cautiously peeked around the corner, well aware of the shooter still around. My mouth fell agape as I took in what I saw. I saw that all of the officers had been shot. I cursed under my breath and continued looking around. I saw Julia's father on his knees. He was grasping his shoulder that was now covered in red from blood.

"What's going on?" I heard Julia whisper next to me.

"Shhh!" I urged her to be quiet so we wouldn't be spotted.

A white man walked up to Julia's father. I think I remember Julia saying her father's name is Vladimir. The man held a gun to Vladimir's head. Luckily we were close enough to hear what he was saying, although we would be luckier to not be here at all. I heard beeping sounds come from behind me. I turned to see that my dad was on the phone with 911. Good.

I looked back to the scene so I could tell what the man was saying.

"Where the hell is she?" The man was yelling at Vladimir. "I paid for her in cash! It's been a year! I've waited for you to get out of this dump for a frickin year! Now your out, so where the hell is she?"

"You were supposed to come get her a frickin year ago." He said the last part mockingly.

The man spun slowly in a circle, wiping his face as if irritated. He was indeed irritated. He turned around quickly, bringing his fist around with him. The man hit him square in the nose. Vladimir stumbled backwards and grunted painfully. He sat up holding his nose and spit blood from his mouth.

"I am not going to keep repeating myself, Vladimir. Now this is my last time asking, where the hell is she?" The man's eyes were bloodshot from anger. He was obviously ticked because he didn't get some girl he paid for-.

It's Julia!

"We have to get out of here!" I whispered frantically.

"Why, what's going on? And I mean besides the fact that the guy has a gun?" Julia asked.

"The man with the gun is looking for you Julia!" My expression was grim. Julia looked like she was going to be sick.

"I'm sorry to say," I heard Vladimir begin talking again, "you just missed her. She's probably gone by now. She wanted to watch me get sent away forever, until you showed up and ruined her party. Every one of them ran and hid."

The man placed the gun against Vladimir's head. He swallowed hard and took a deep breath. "Come on Vladimir, no more games. And, who is them?" The man asked.

Vladimir sighed and looked in our direction. He looked me dead in the eye. I quickly turned to Julia and grabbed her shoulders. "Julia, listen to me, that guy is looking for you! Your father sold you out. When I say run, I want all of you to run!"

"Are you crazy?" Julia said freaking out now. "He has a gun, and you'll get yourself killed! I won't let that happen!"

This is the last thing I expected to happen today. I figured we would come here, watch Vladimir get taken away while Julia stares intensively, and go home. But no. We come here and have to witness Vladimir get Julia killed by some guy that apparently paid for her. Not to mention the rest of us getting killed. I couldn't let that happen to everyone.

Besides, it's better that one goes instead of all.

I looked around the corner and saw that the man was making his way over to us. He had his gun in his hand, and it was pointed towards the wall we were hiding behind. To my surprise, he stopped.

His tone became somewhat softer. "I know your back there. All I want is the girl and then I'll be on my way."

I looked around trying my best to stay calm. Everyone was looking at me. Great. The only door I saw was an emergency exit and they only open from the inside. I cursed under my breath and turned back towards the corner just as he began speaking again.

"I know your there! Now hand over the girl, or else!" He spoke with such rage it made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up.

"One..." He began counting.

I looked behind me and my body stiffened. Julia was starting at me intensely with her big, gorgeous chocolate brown eyes that after today, I might never see again.

"Two..." He walked behind the corner so he could see each and every one of us clearly.

Julia gasped and I pulled her into my arms. Max did the same with Shelby. My dad stood in front of Tony to give him all of the protection he could. I got one more good look at my family and friends before the shooter for to three. They were closing their eyes. With Julia so close, I put my cheek up against her hair that smelled temptingly of strawberries, and closed my eyes along with everyone else.

"Three!"

Bang! bang! bang!
