Chapter 28
Joe

I didn't dare open my eyes.

I was so frightened to see who was shot and who wasn't. I obviously wasn't, but if Julia was, I might as well be. I opened one eye at a time, readying myself. To my surprise nobody was hurt. No one except for the white man with the gun who was now face first in the ground. He had three small blood spots on his back that were slowly growing larger. I stared in confusion at the unmoving body. Has the police shown up? If they have, I didn't hear them.

I looked around to assure everyone's safety. Once I was finished asking everyone if they were fine, we all came from behind the wall. There were no police cars. There were no police (alive). We only saw Vladimir still on his knees and holding his bloodied shoulder, only now he had one of the dead police officer's guns in his hand. Julia backed up being me and I put my arm in front of her protectively, but he only stared. He watched us with tired eyes. He was breathing heavily as if he had ran a long distance. All of a sudden, he dropped the gun and sat back. He wiped his sweaty head and spoke.

"I never did like that man," he said calmly.

Bright police lights and policemen with guns soon filled the parking lot. They questioned us about what happened, we told them, and then the white man's body was taken away. I walked with Julia to the ambulance where her father was being care for.

"Why?" She asked him.

"Why what?" He asked playing dumb.

"Why did you shoot that man? He was going to take me and shoot everyone else! Why did you save us?"

He thanked the nurse as she left and looked at Julia with curiosity. "Why does it matter?" he asked.

"It matters because I want to know." I could tell that she was fighting to hold back her tears.

"I did it because I couldn't stand him."

Julia sneered at his answer. "No. I don't believe you. You may not like him, but I don't believe that's why you shot him. Tell me the truth for once."

A police officer came over and put Vladimir in hand cuffs, he let him stay to finish his conversation though. "Something just came over me." Is what he said.

"Alright," the office said, "time to go."

Julia just ignored the office as he headed towards the car. "Oh yeah," she asked him as he got into the car, "and what exactly came over you?"
