December 31st 1977

Eloise sat on New Years Eve in the common room surrounded by her friends with ten minutes to spare until midnight as drunk teens danced all around them. Her fiancé by her side arm placed around her waist as the group of teens sipped on their firewhiskey. All was well in the Gryffindor common room on December 31st 1977 at precisely 23:50pm, the students excited to begin a new year and finish their last months at Hogwarts. All was well until 23:52pm when a familiar owl that Eloise recognised as the one that belonged to her parents, swooped in and dropped a letter into her lap.

"Oh! It's from Mum and Dad" she squealed in excitement loudly over the music playing in the background "I told them about the engagement" she said with a bright smile on her face as James moved forward nodding for her to read the letter. But his heart dropped as Eloise's expression did when her eyes scanned over the paper, her smile getting smaller and smaller before she let out a loud sob.

James hadn't heard such a pained sound since Eloise's first kitten died when they were eight years old. It was a cry that no curse or flame could bring. His sister was sobbing with such agony it seemed as though it were worse than being tortured with the cruiciatus curse. And so, with trembling hands and a brand new fear of the unknown James picked up the letter his sister had dropped and read the words for himself. His heart breaking completely.

My Dear children, the letter began.

We feel as though we need to tell you just how proud of you we are. Eloise, Sirius, congratulations on the engagement, we are so happy for the both of you. A lovely winter wedding in 1979 sounds fantastic my dear. And James, we are beyond proud of your achievements in school, Lily is a lovely girl and I'm sure you will make us some fine grandchildren. (-dad).

But we haven't been being completely honest with any of you. My dear sweet children we love you all so so much. But we are ill, the healers have said it's bad, dragon pox. Our chances of survival are slim and they're hoping we may live to see the end of 1978, but I think they're just trying to make us feel better.

We love you all so so much, but please do not cry when we are gone. As you know it is contagious, and so we have both agreed that it would be best if you all return to Eloise and Sirius' home during the easter and summer. We will visit, but it will be from a distance. One day we will meet again my darlings, we love you all endless amounts.

Until we meet again,

Mum and Dad x

The scrawl on the page was much messier compared to their mothers usual handwriting making it clear just how weak their parents are, the twins knew that the old couple probably wouldn't live to see their children finish their N.E.W.Ts. James pulled his sister into a tight embrace as they sobbed in each others arms, they only had each other now, they were the only two Potter's left alive and one of them was soon to become a Black.

James tried to hold himself together and stay strong for his sister but he was failing miserably as tears slipped out of his eyes falling onto his sisters head. "it's you and me now El, you and me" he breathed

"Don't ever leave me James" she sobbed

"I won't" he said "I won't I promise"

Sirius Black held the letter tears of his own escaping his eyes. To him Fleamont and Euphemia are his real parents, as far as he was concerned Walburga was a surrogate and Orion a sperm donor. He had wanted them both to be in attendance to his wedding to their daughter but it seemed as though that was hopeless, a dream that would never come true. He watched as their friends comforted the twins who were sobbing sadly in each others arms a never ending stream of tears cascading down both of their faces the phrase 'cry me a river' seeming scarily possible in this moment as Sirius witnessed this heartbreak.

The other students in the common room began counting down from ten as midnight approached, sad looks on the marauders faces as they too felt as though they were losing a part of them.

Eloise and James held each other close in a way that seemed as though they were trying to cage each other away from the rest of the world. Memories of their parents played through their minds as they accepted that platform 9 3/4 three months ago was perhaps the last time that they would ever see their parents.

"Five!" chanted the teens in the common room

James remembered the time when he and El were six and running around the gardens of their manor playing hide and seek with their house elf. But James fell over and scraped his knee, and so Fleamont brought him a brand new toy broomstick.

"Four!"

Eloise remembered when she was 13 years old and had her first crush on a boy, Gideon Prewett and telling her mother all about it, as they had a 'girls day' getting their hair and nails done in a muggle town.

"Three!"

James reminisced on the time when he was 11 and first laid eyes on Lily Evans rushing straight to his dormitory to write a letter to his mother about the beautiful girl with the red hair, and her giving him advice, which he of course ignored instead seeking advice from his father, proving unsuccessful.

"Two!"

Eloise thought about the time when she told her father about her first boyfriend in her fourth year at Hogwarts, Fabian Prewett, and he of course wrote to her instructing her to tell the boy that if he ever hurts his baby girl he will personally invert his knee caps.

"One!"

And together the twins thought about the present, and how things were going to change now, because suddenly everything became all too real as they held each other close and tight not willing to let go as if something might happen and steal the other away from the world. Because the harsh reality was Fleamont and Euphemia Potter were practically already dead. They were on deaths door, now all the twins could do is wait for that dreaded letter, or call from their headmaster telling them to meet him in his office in which he would tell them that their parents had unfortunately passed.

"Happy New Year!"

And whilst everyone cheered for the new year of 1978, the marauders sat with solemn expressions drawn on each of their faces.

And Eloise Potter wouldn't have her father to give her away on her wedding day.
