you stared at your reflection in the mirror, not entirely sure if the person looking back was actually you. you gazed at your y/e/c eyes, the whites of your eyes now a deep shade of pink. the y/h/c hair that you spent hours styling, slightly disheveled. you tugged at your too - tight denim skirt, and adjusted the waist band where you had tucked in your sweater. you looked up again and gripped the edge of the counter and saw the girl who put on an act, the one who's lovers kept leaving her behind, the one who pretended everything was okay when her life was actually falling apart. you weren't sure who you had become anymore.
you were far from an adult and had already fallen into a hole that you weren't sure how to dig yourself out of. a life where you tried your hardest to be the perfect child. you drowned yourself in honors classes and extracurriculars. you became your little sibling's third parent and your own parents' mediator, therapist, and personal punching bag. you did all this during the day, only to be consumed in a world of drugs, alcohol, and meaningless sex by night. you couldn't bear to force yourself to get clean, when your other identity is what kept you afloat.
you lived in a world where people looked at you as something disposable, when all you wanted was for someone to look at you like you were the world. you wanted someone to save you from that life, and from yourself. but the sad thing is, you didn't know another way to live.
you washed your hands and looked down in shame at the traces of white powder scattered across the counter next to a rolled up bill. grabbing the beer you had placed next to it, you took a sip, refusing to let yourself feel guilty for using something that made you feel alive.
you took a deep breath, before pushing open the bathroom door and stumbling into the main hallway. you greeted the people you recognized from school, as well as the people that you knew you would never see again after the party was over. it took you a minute to remember where you were supposed to go because the disco lights and pounding music temporarily took over your senses, but you eventually made your way over to the kitchen. there stood your friends, noah, elijah, bianca, talia, and alessandra, who were playing beer pong.
(a/n: to avoid confusion, i'll just give your friend's names instead of the usual 'y/f/n'.)
you made your way over to noah, who leaned against the counter to watch the game between the rest of the group. he immediately raised his arm up to offer you a side hug as he noticed your presence.
"what's up y/n?" he asked, as you leaned into his side.
"nothing much," you giggled, gazing into his brown eyes, which were normally vibrant, but slightly dulled because of the redness that weed brought to them. "you know what i'm here for."
"well, who's the lucky guy you're taking home tonight? you've been on a streak and breaking hearts for the past month," he slurred.
"you know it's not like that. but, the last wanker i took home was upset with me after he found out that i'm the type to 'hit and quit'," you joked.
"well, i'm willing to bet money that it's going to be some bloke from the rugby team. unless you want elijah to introduce you to the new kid," talia interjected.
you stuck your tongue out at the girl, who had become her girlfriend, alessandra's, personal cheerleader for the current round of beer pong.
"there's a new kid?"
"you haven't heard? he's become quite popular since his arrival last month. great lad all around, and even better on the field. apparently he's supposed to be here tonight with the rest of the guys on the football team," elijah said, wiggling his eyebrows at you suggestively.
