you felt like there were only so many more stories you could hear before you actually started to lose your mind. after all, it felt like everyone had found their soulmates except for you.

your best friend, your siblings, even your cousins had already found theirs. who could blame you for being frustrated that you hadn't found your own?

you often found yourself day dreaming about the day when you'd actually get to meet your soulmate. "what color would their hair be?" or "what are their hidden talents?" were just some of the many questions that crossed your mind.

after all, the people in movies and books that you had fallen in love with had left you with incredibly high standards.

"so, i was turning the corner and looking at a text my mom had sent me. out of nowhere, i just walked face first into someones chest!" your classmate exclaimed. "obviously, my eyes shut because i flinched on impact. except when i looked up, i could see color."

everyone else in the room fawned over her words, even your teacher. you forced a smile and a few words of congratulations before turning back around to face the window.

they had to be out there somewhere.

you counted each crack in the sidewalk as you made your way down the street. there wasn't much to enjoy looking at when everything was compiled of different shades of black and white.

but the one thing that never disappointed, was books. everyone who was able to see color said that books remained black and white, and that was really the only thing that gave you comfort.

waving at the familiar cashier upon entry, you traveled to the back of the bookstore where all the longer novels and chapter books were.

this was something you did regularly. after school you came to the bookstore and often left with a new book. it put a dent in your wallet, sure, but it's not like you had a partner to spend money on. eyeing each book carefully, one in particular seemed to have caught your eye.

"the case of the missing marquess..." you mumbled, inspecting the cover.

you brought yourself down to the floor, sitting with your legs crossed and your back against the wall. admittedly, the first few pages were good, and you were transported to a world of your own.

until the sound of someone clearing their throat forced you to look up.

"sorry to bother you, but is that the only copy left?"

the voice belonged to a boy your age, in a hoodie and a baggy pair of jeans. you found his features quite alluring, but it pained you that you didn't know what color his hair or his eyes were.

"is it?" you asked, quickly standing up to inspect the shelf that you pulled the book from.

when you realized that the last copy was in fact, in your hand, you stuck the book out to him.

"it's all yours. i'm sure i can find another one somewhere else," you mumbled, scratching the back of your neck awkwardly.

"no, you had it first," he chuckled, pushing the book back towards your hands. "i can go find another one."

you took it from him with a small smile, reaching for the book in his outstretched hands. while your fingers made contact with the hard cover, your wrist brushed against his.

immediately on impact, you suddenly felt blinded by the bright color that coated the cover of the book. you looked up at the stranger frantically, his shocked expression matching yours.

"y-your hair is the same color as the shelves," you choked out.

"your shirt is the same color as the book," he muttered.

the two of you stared at each other wordlessly, not exactly sure what to do next.

hesitantly he stepped forward, opening his arms slightly. the expression on his face asked you a silent question.

as if it was a habit, you walked into his embrace and tugged on his hoodie slightly. his arms wrapped around your shoulders and he rested his chin on top of your head, since he was taller than you.

"my name's louis."

"y/n."
