Treasure Island

Chapter 5

The first class wasn't so difficult for Yuri, as she was quite good at math, but in the second period, biology, she could barely get one answer right. Ms. Lee was testing her knowledge, saying it was an "initiation quiz".

At break time, Ms. Lee left the class. Yuri pulled out a book from the shelves in the classroom and sat down to read it. Only that she didn't. She observed the others, as they joked around and played. She remembered when she used to play with her  friends.

The door opened. Yuri jumped, surprised. She thought Ms. Lee wouldn't come back so fast. It turned to be Jaehyuk, Doyoung, and Jeongwoo, all the three smiling brightly, shameless. Hyunsuk glared at them.

"Hey, why did you guys come back?"

"You turned against us too, hyung? Aw... man!" Doyoung exclaimed.

"Who argues about orange peelings in class? Ms. Lee punished the whole class for it! Now we've got an extra hour of study just because of you idiots!"

"Calm down, dude. We still had to stand outside," said Jaehyuk, making Hyunsuk's temper worse.

"I could have finished my mission. I will forget those cheat codes again!" wailed Junkyu, whose significant other was probably a video game. 

Yuri felt awkward being the only girl, especially when the others were fighting. Asahi saw that and said:

"Sorry, I know my friends are really noisy sometimes. But they are also very kind-hearted."

Asahi normally didn't approach people that fast, but he understood that Yuri was also kind of shy. 

Yuri looked up. Asahi smiled and asked:

"You like murder mysteries?" he pointed at the book she was holding.

"Uh, yeah. I like how they never end the way you imagine them to. And you?"

"I don't usually read books much, but I like making music."

"Really?! What kind?" Yuri really liked listening to music, and she was glad that she found somebody with the same taste as her. 

"Well, I like–"

But he never got to finish, because Jihoon interrupted him.

"Asahi, Yuri just got here, and you're hitting on her already?" He liked teasing people.

Asahi gave him an "are you serious" look, and turned to Yuri:

"Don't mind him even if he's quite annoying."

Yuri chuckled. Jihoon frowned, but before he could say anything, Ms. Lee entered the class.

After lunch, everybody had to go to the garden behind the building. It was really big and green. This was the first time Yuri left the building since she teleported there.

Everybody was walking with somebody else, chatting excitedly. Junkyu noticed that Yuri was alone, so he went up to her.

"So you really thought there are only 13 of us?" he asked this suddenly, making her jump.

"Um... Yeah. Why?"

"There are others too, but only on this island. They are basically in hiding."

"Why?"

"Cuz, many years ago, like a century or something, there was a conflict between normal humans and humans with magical powers like ours. All started when a little boy was being bullied by his seniors in school. His power was telekinesis, like Hyunsuk hyung.

The older boys were hitting him so much, that unable to hold his emotions in, he lashed out in anger, sending some of them flying. The people around them weren't aware of the bullying, but they noticed this happening.

The news flew all over the country, then the whole world. This created a big war between humans and us. They caught every magical being and imprisoned them. But they also fought back. Using their powers, they killed many human beings.

But, in the end, humans managed to capture and kill most of us. Except our grandparents and some of their friends. They were living on this island, and a protective shield is around this island. So, no human being can come in here. That's why this place is the safest for us." 

"But why didn't my parents want me to come here, then? They wanted me to stay in Seoul."

"Maybe because they thought that you would never show your powers to anyone, that you could already control them. Ever wonder why most of the people ignored you?"

Yuri gasped. They had thought she was magical, and dangerous.

Junkyu continued, "Your life was in danger. Some humans still think the magical beings are alive. And they are determined to kill us. All of this because of a little misunderstanding."

Yuri was surprised. She had never seen Junkyu looking so grave. Every time she saw him, he was all smiles. But now, it wasn't the same heart-fluttering guy she saw the day before.
