Teenage Blues

"You what?!" Victoria's shrieks as we rush out of the girl's toilets. I don't have a chance to say anything else before she walks straight into a pole. She quickly gets up and gains her composure before fire comes spewing out of her mouth and eyes. "You what?! Mr Gold what?!" I'm scared. Scared of what Victoria will do. She does have the habit of being brash and violent sometimes. She says it runs in her African blood. Mum says she gets it from me.

Some students look at us as if we're people from the psychiatrist ward, so she pulls me into the nearest supply closet and slams the door behind us. "Ok." She takes a deep breath and the words come tumbling out, "Mr Gold decided it would be a good idea to pair you up with David?" I nod my head. She sighs and rubs her temples. "You do realise what happens when girls get paired up with him? They fall head over heels for his charms," I don't like how she stresses that word, "and then they give him a trip into pleasure land."

I snort, "I'm not -"

She interrupts me, "I'm not saying you'll give him a trip to pleasure land, but don't fall for him."

"I won't."

"Good." She gives me a hug before unlocking the door. "I'll see you tomorrow." She says as she heads to her car. I nod and go my own way. As I'm about heading towards the car, I see Alyssa sitting by the stone steps. I can't turn away from her. For some reason she draws me in like a magnet.

"Hey." I say as I come to a standstill beside her.

She looks up and offers me a smile. "Hey." Her voice is small and barely audible as cars drive past.

"What are you still doing here?" I ask sitting beside her. I should be going home. Dad (my step dad) is coming back today from his business trip, and I'm supposed to be baking him a welcome home cake, filled with milk and white chocolate and whipped cream. My mouth waters at the thought of it.

"I'm waiting for my lift."

"Really?" I look at my watch. It's not going to take long for the entire school to be empty. "Do you want me to give you a lift?" I can't believe I'm saying this. Even Alyssa looks surprised.

"Really? I didn't think you liked me." She says even more quietly.

I shrug my shoulders. "Do you need a lift or not?"

She looks at me for what seems like an hour before nodding. "Yes." Her eyes flicker for a moment and my breath catches in my throat.

"Have I met you somewhere before?"

She shakes her head. "No."

I sigh, but don't believe her. I never forget a face. "Ok. Come on." She stands up and we both make our way to my car. "Where do you live?" I ask as I begin reversing out of the car park.

"Golden bay." She replies, readjusting her glasses. I nod my head and begin driving towards the brand new suburb stationed beside the new shopping complex. Seeing I have a fragile passenger in my car, who would no doubt turn green and puke all over the vehicle if I drive at a hundred and forty kilometres an hour, or outrun traffic lights, I decide to take it slow. It's tedious. My heart races in anticipation after the turn at the intersection towards Golden bay. I can't wait to get Alyssa out of my car and speed home.

"Stop the car. You can drop me off here."

I raise my eyebrow. We're right beside the football field. "But this is definitely not your house." I reply pointing outside.

She smiles, unbuckling the seatbelt, "Just stop the car Amanda."

"Why?" My voice comes out harsher than I intended. I don't cringe. I don't expect her to recoil at my words. She looks at me as if I'm a serial killer.
