I should have ran towards the table and grabbed my gun, but I didn't. Instead, I find myself running through the hallway, with Angel not to far behind. A gunshot rings out, and a hole is made in the wall beside me. More gunshots ring out, and I make a sharp turn at the end of the hallway, and into the laundry.
Flashbacks of playing a game of chasey with dad, comes flooding back, as I throw the backyard door open. Everything is different now. This is not a child's game. If I lose, I will not be swept up in dad's arms and tickled to death. His stubby red beard will not tickle my cheeks as he places kisses on them.
I slam the backyard door behind me, hoping it will buy me a few precious seconds. It doesn't. Angel is stronger and faster than I am. Another shot rings out, and I rush towards the fence, hoping to jump over it.
I jump forward once I reach the fence, and place my hands at the top of the wooden barrier. I am about lifting my left leg up, when I am yanked from the barricade and spun around. Before I can register what is going on, Angel hits me on the side of the face with his gun. It almost knocks me off my feet, and he hits me again. This time, I fall to the floor, and land terribly on my side.
My chest area burns as I gasp for air. Angel points the gun at my face. "Do you really think I was stupid, Bubblegum?" he sneers. I remain silent. "Do you think I didn't know who you were, from the moment I saw you in Macy's club?" He chuckles before continuing, "Did Liev send you here? In fact, what were you planning to do?" I don't reply. "Did you really think you could take everything from me? You know what happened after your father left? I rebuilt what he had demolished. I cleaned up his mess and took control of the gang once again. Do you really think I'd let you trample all over it?"
"I don't want the gang." I can taste the blood in my mouth. If I ever manage to claw my way out of this one, I'll need to stock up on foundation. Bruises aren't so easy to hide.
"Sure you don't." Angel crouches down to my eye level and licks his lips. "You know, I had a fun time with you when we first met. I'd sure like to do it again." I watch with keen eyes as he places his gun in his pocket.
"How about a no?"
"Maybe I should blow your head off first."
"Maybe you should." My hand curls into a fist, and before he can react, I punch him on the jaw. As he stumbles, I snatch myself from the ground and make a second attempt to jump the fence.
Let's just say I don't make it that far. Angel grabs me by my hair and throws me to the ground again. "You little bitch," he seethes, pulling out his gun. "I'll kill you right here, right now. Probably cut you up and send your pieces to your son-of-a-bitch father in jail."
I lock eyes with the gun's muzzle. I tell myself that if I die today, I'll be able to tell the devil himself, I died the hardcore way. I almost laugh at the thought. But then I think of mum and dad, and almost snivel on the floor, begging Angel for a second chance. Angel's finger presses the trigger and I close my eyes as the fatal shot is fired. There is silence, and then, nothing.
I feel nothing.
