I didn’t expect Liam to follow through with taking care of Charlie; but he did.
You know what travels faster than drugs and alcohol in Port Headland? News. Good hot news. Apparently Charlie packed his bags and left town late last night, and isn’t planning on coming back any time soon. I grin with glee when I hear the news. That’s one less person to worry about.
I spend more or less of my day confined to the house. I really can't afford to go anywhere else apart from Macy’s Strip Club. Last time I decided to venture out of the house, someone figured out who I was in less than two seconds. So, I think it’s best I just stay indoors. At this rate, I’ll probably self-destruct without the help of Viper. It’s always something to look forward to.
At lunchtime, I make myself something to eat, and continue reading through Sophie-Marie’s letters. I find nothing earth shattering. It’s just the same old talk about being a part of the family and getting some cash. No matter what the subject matter was, the messages became even more violent and hostile. At this point, Sophie-Marie is at the top of my pretty small list of the people who could have killed Old Man Black. But, I also have to think of other members of the gang who would have also wanted him dead.
I check my phone every half an hour for updates from David, but receive nothing. I just hope he isn’t getting high on dope, or found some girl to bang. The thought of that makes me recoil. That reminds me; I should probably get my lady parts checked out once this whole thing is over and done with, seeing I have been failing to keep my legs closed for the past week or so.
I refuse to turn on the television, for the fear of making too much noise. My gun lies on the table beside me, and I spend the next two hours alternating between checking my nails and the clock. I’ve got a four hour shift starting today at six, and I’m not looking forward to it.
I try not to think of my parents: especially my mum. I hope she’s okay, but deep down, I know I’m just shitting myself. I’m going to have a lot of explaining to do when I get her back –if I get her back, that is. I just hope David finds something. If not, I’ll have to make Liam talk, my way.
At five, I leave my spot in the living room to get ready for my shift at work. I don’t eat before I leave. I make up for this by chastising myself, saying I’d regret it by the time it’s seven thirty. But what’s a girl got to do, when she’s on the verge of puking from fear and worry? I can’t afford to throw up in the middle of work. I might as well just kiss it goodbye.
I throw my bag on the back seat and reverse out of the driveway, as I gear myself for yet another night serving booze, and figuring out my non-existent game plan.
My shift begins with the same old: changing into my revealing outfit behind the velvet curtains, and fixing up my lipstick. I’m not surprised when I notice that the bag from yesterday is long gone. I ignore the theories emerging in my head, regarding what the note in the bag meant, and whom it was for. I don’t have time to waste. The note probably has something to do with one of the gang dealings in town, and I couldn’t care less about that.
I run my fingers through my hair and make my way out of the room. Lily, who was on stage when I arrived, is now standing by the bar, with a glass of whiskey in hand.
