“Did you kill Alyssa Greyheart?”
“No.”
The officer sighs and places the photograph on the table. “So, if you had nothing to do with her death, why are you, Amanda Winter, standing over her dead body.”
“I don’t know.” I rub my shoulders. I’m freezing. The room is white. A large wooden table is in the middle of the room. Two chairs are stationed at the left side of the table, and one chair is stationed on the right. A small water station is situated at the corner of the room. I was in this room once, when I was giving an account of events leading to Victoria’s disappearance. Now, this room has become my prison. I am the caged animal and the officers are out to get me.
“Did you kill Georgia Summers?”
“No.”
The officer takes a seat and crosses his arm. “Tell me about what you did at the Ball.”
“Why,” I ask, leaning towards him. “Haven’t you been to a Ball before?”
“Answer the question!” He snaps.
“I did what everyone else did at the Ball. I ate, I drank and I danced-”
“With who?”
“David Walker.”
“Well, that’s very convenient.”
“What do you mean?”
“We didn’t see David Walker at the Ball.”
I’m taken aback. “What?”
“When we you were taken away, everyone was accounted for, including Georgia. Everyone… except David Walker.”
“You’re wrong. He was there with me.” I’m beginning to panic. Cold sweat breaks out on my forehead. My skin prickles. The hair at the back of my neck stands still. Am I mad? Am I crazy? Did I imagine the entire Ball? Did Hotpants even come with me?
“What did you do during the course of the night? Did you see Georgia? Did you talk to her?”
I close my eyes and take a deep breath before slowly opening them. “I want a lawyer.”
A smirk makes its way across the officer’s face. I want to slap him. “Don’t worry, Ms. Winter. Your lawyer will soon be here.” He says, as he exits the room.
I begin yanking the endless stack of bobby pins in my hair as my brain operates at a zillion miles per second. I try remembering the events that took place yesterday that somehow landed me in the Police Station. However, there’s a point where reality fades away and recollection of events become nothing but blurred lines across the expanse of my mind.
