It’s seven o’clock in the morning when we arrive at the fork in the road. It doesn’t take me long to realize our situation. Turning left would mean driving another thirty kilometers to Karratha, and turning right would set us on a three hour drive to Port Headland. I take a quick glance at Hotpants, before briefly looking at my reflection in the rearview mirror. Both of us look worse for wear and I am tired. The adrenaline in my system wore off thirty minutes after leaving Carnarvon and David fell asleep fifteen minutes later, leaving me to drive alone in silence.

I bite my lip, trying to make a hasty decision before a car appears out of nowhere, driving at a hundred kilometers per hour and plows into the car. I need to make it to Port Headland quickly, but in one piece, not two or six. I lean over and shake Hotpants awake. “Do you want to do the remaining driving?”

He looks at me with one eye open. “How long will it be?”

“Three hours,” I reply.

He groans and turns over. “You do it. I’m tired.”

If I wasn’t so tired and curious about the psycho bitch who wanted his head on a silver platter, I would have pushed him out of the car and forced him to find his way home, alone. “We can go to Karratha and stay there for the day,” I suggest dumbly. Since when did I start explaining myself to him?

“Sounds good to me,” He mutters before yawning.

A car drives past us and I roll my eyes before turning left, towards Karratha. I feel like I’m on my way to a twisted reunion. Keeping my eyes on the road is hard, and I have to force myself to keep them open. I almost nod of three times. Halfway through our journey, I realize I can’t take it any longer. I pull off at the side of the road and grab some lollies and biscuits from the backseat, before placing both legs on the small room on the dashboard, and eating.

David wakes up sometime later. “What are you doing?” I don’t answer. He has two eyes. He can see what I’m doing. “Where are we?”

“Fifteen minutes away from Karratha.”

He begins cracking his neck and knuckles. “So, what are we going to do, once we get there?”

“Stop asking questions.”

“No, honestly, what are we going to do when we get there?”

I take my legs down from the dashboard, throw the remaining food at him and then put on my seatbelt. “We will hopefully lay low, and stop ourselves from killing one another.” I slam my foot on the accelerator and we are on the road again.

David grumbles. “I suppose staying in Karratha wasn’t a part of the plan.”

“Neither were you,” is my harsh remark.

“If I hadn’t come in and saved your ass, you’d be dead by now.” He rebuffs quickly.

“I’m not the one who pissed off a psycho bitch!”
