Dirty Little Schemes

There are two rules I abide by: never pick on the innocent, and take revenge on the guilty.

And that's what I did to Nathan, and boy did I have fun with that.

It was the start of year eleven and Victoria was ecstatic about getting another Black student in our year group. I could do nothing but listen to her ramble on about how much fun it would be. To be honest, I was mentally preparing myself for another crazy person in my life and could easily feel jealousy slithering through my veins at the thought of sharing her with someone else.

So when he finally arrived, Victoria had already sorted everything out. She even pasted pictures of the Sahara desert, lions, antelopes, zebras, Mt Kilimanjaro and the savannah on his locker (although I think that was a bit creepy), and placed flags of a few African countries at the sides of the locker, to make him feel welcome. Imagine Victoria's face when he instantly ripped all her hard work from his locker and dumped it in the bin in the blink of an eye. I took one look at him and instantly disliked him.

Victoria went to say hi to him and their conversation mostly consisted of Victoria talking in paragraphs and Nathan replying in monosyllables saying "yes" and "no". I could do nothing but stand in the corner and force myself not to go over there and drag my friend away. I told myself it wasn't my place to get involved. After all, it was Black people's business.

Things went downhill from there. Nathan was a football player and even though I hate to admit it, he was better than the average player, and soon joined the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood refers to the football players at school. By joining the Brotherhood, his status sky rocketed and so did his ego. He could literally have any girl he wanted and soon joined ranks with David. He was also in my literature class which was bloody agitating. He thought he was so high and powerful because somehow, the African race was ten times better than the White race; and would use smart and philosophical language to seem smart. Obviously, the girls drooled over him, but they didn't understand. They didn't understand that he didn't know the meaning of over eighty percent of the words he was saying, thus making him look ridiculous to those who were smart. Of course I ignored him, but for some reason he had his eyes set on Victoria.

Everyone has their flaws and I pick up on them. Victoria has more flaws than the average human being. It's hard to distinguish her craziness as a flaw or an advantage. Her outrageous behavior is great when she tries to make people happy after they've had a big cry or when she dissolves an awkward situation. However, it becomes a flaw when she overdoes it and just goes to an extreme. An example of this was in year ten when she casually asked if rabbits laid eggs and began casually going on about Easter eggs and how rabbits laid them. Once she even began a conversation with herself on how mermaids would reproduce after we learnt about a fish's reproductive system. Problem was she didn't realize we could all hear her.

Nathan used this to his advantage and it wasn't long before brochures for aged care facilities and mental health clinics mysteriously began turning up in her locker. Being Victoria, she ignored it. After all, she was a strong Black woman. However, I had a feeling it was Nathan. My suspicions were confirmed when Nathan began harassing Victoria telling her she had "forty screws" loose her in head and she needed to go to a psychiatric hospital. Victoria would always tell me to ignore it, but I never did. The brochures and taunting continued for about six weeks. Then I had enough. It was after school when I cornered him in the hallway and threw his back against the wall. For a moment he looked surprised. He still didn't know how the school worked. But I did.
