It was a week after my twin brother, Nathan, and I graduated junior high that my mother insisted that we take a family trip to the lake. She said that now is the most important times of our live's and we have to cherish all the time we have with our family before Nathan and I leave for college. Although she knows that Nathan and I don't plan on going to college because we have our heads set on going big with our band that we were in the makings of. My father and mother support our dreams, but they want us to have something to lean back on if our dreams of performing don't go as planned. Nathan had committed this week to be the time to complete our first album, "Fresh Start," in honor of us beginning the next chapter of our lives in high school. The two of us talked about debuting our album at our 16th birthday party, which happened to be in four months.
Our trip came to an end after spending the first two weeks of our summer at the lake house. It was a much needed trip for my family. My parents constantly leaving for work, while my brother was with his guy friends skating at the park, and I was with my best friends Flynn and Julie. I've spent most nights at Julie's house, helping her get through the lose of her mother that passed last year. Rose Molina was like another mother to me and when she died I was lost for the first month. I frequently found myself going into the Molina's garage and playing on the piano that Rose played with me on, working on possible songs for my brother and I.
"Hey Nova," Nathan said pulling me out of my thoughts as I was texting my boyfriend, Danny for the last 4 months that I was on my way home, "Have you thought about the name I suggested for our band." I walked down the stairs of our lake house and put my phone in my back pocket, "Nate I don't know about the name TwinNado," I laughed a the name as I met up with him. I threw one of my suit cases at him for him to put it away. He caught it with a grunt, "Shit Nov, what the hell did you pack in here. Fucking rocks," he stuffed it in the trunk, "Come on. The name sounds great." He walked to sit on the walk next to me, "Plus we need a name so I can start making the merch." A small smile crept on my face, "Of course you're thinking of ways to make money," as I shook my head and sat next to him, and leaned my head on his shoulder.
"Hey! I'm not doing it for the money, I'm doing it so we can get our name out there," I raised my head to look at him with a bored expression, "Okay! Maybe the money won't be a bad pro. All I'm saying is that I want to get TwinNado out there. We need to create a fan base." I placed my head back on his shoulder, "I love you weirdo," told my brother. " He placed a small kiss on top of my head, "I love you too, Nov. Pretty soon our names will be lit up in big neon signs. I promise we're gonna make it big," his gazed at the lake in front of us.
"Let's get going kids," we turned to see our dad waving us over. "Coming dad," I got up and dragged my brother behind me, "Where's mom?" My dad pointed to the house before my mom came out with a camera, "Okay! Everyone stand together for one last photo." Nate lets out a frustrated sigh, "Mom we literally just spent the whole week taking photos. I think you have enough," he moved to open the car door. "Nathan Anthony Garcia, you will take one last photo or else I'll throw out those drums of yours when we get home," my mom screamed at my brother that looks like a scared puppy after she mentioned the drums.
"Not the drums Mom," he whined. "Then take the photo Nathan," she set up the camera on the ledge of the wall before to stand next to my father for the picture, "Smile everyone."
* SNAP *
We were waiting on the last red light to turn green, before we turn into our neighborhood, while my mother looked through the pictures that were taken throughout the week, "Aw my babies are the cutest," she gushed.
Nathan stared out the car window, head bumping to the music he had blasting through his airpods. The light finally turned green as my father started to turn left before Nate screamed, "WATCH OUT!" He turned his body towards me to cover me when our car was hit by someone driving full speed through the red light. All I heard was screaming from my family as our car continuously flipped. Glass shattered everywhere as our car was totaled on my brother's side. It stopped flipping with the car being upside down.
My brother's arms were still around me, protecting me, as he said, "We'll be okay, Nov. I promise." I faced my brother and was shocked to see shards of glass sticking out of his back and blood pouring from a cut on his forehead. The last thing I heard was the police and ambulance sirens and the voice of my brother, "Stay strong Nov," before I blacked out.
. . .
The sounds of a beeping monitor woke me. I opened my, then closed them shut at the bright white lights that surrounded me.
"Aye Mija your awake!" A familiar voice said noticing my eyes opening. I opened my eyes to see an elderly woman, "Grandma what happened," I looked around the pastel blue and white room, "Why am I in the hospital. Oh my god," realization hit me. "Where's mom and dad? Where's Nate? Are they okay" I rushed questions about my family as I remembered the crash. The heart monitor started increasing as my heart beat accelerated, fearing for my family as my grandmother's face fell.
"Nova. Honey," she sucked in a shaky breath, "They didn't make it."
Tears immediately fell down my face, "No. No. That can't be true. They're fine," my head shook in disbelief.
"Mija I'm so sorry," she cried as she grabbed my hand, "but they didn't make it. You're parents were dead already before the ambulance got there. Nate died on the way here, Nova," she whipped her nose with a tissue.
I started hyperventilating, "No," I cried out, "He promised me." I ran my trembling hands through my hair. "Nathan promised me everything would be okay."
He lied to me. He told me we would make it big together. He told me everything would be okay.
My grandma reached for me to pull me into a hug, "I'm sorry Mija," as we cried together.
I can't live without them, especially Nate. He was my rock, my best friend, and the only person to keep me grounded in this fucked up world.
