Demi's POV

I was nervous as I watched Lexi eat her cereal. I didn't know how she would react when I told her that she's going to see the care home again. I took a bite from my own cereal before speaking. "So, Lexi, after breakfast, we have to go see that care place." She immediately dropped her spoon and stood up, her lip starting to tremble. "No, it's not what you think," I said, standing up myself. As I walked over to her, she started backing up towards the wall. I kneeled in front of her and wrapped my arms around her. She struggled against me, but I didn't leave her. "It's okay, I'm not sending you back." She was crying, the only noise coming from her were hiccups and sniffles. She relaxed after she heard my words, and allowed herself to fall into my arms. "Shh, it's okay. I'm not going to leave you there," I said as I stroked lexi's hair, her crying into my shoulder. After she calmed down, I stood back up and picked Lexi up, sitting her back in front of her cereal. "Now, the sooner we take care of this, the sooner we can move on." She nodded and continued eating.

I pulled into the driveway of the car home, then looked back at Lexi. "It's going to be okay. Remember, you aren't staying here." She nodded in response. She still hasn't said a word since I found her. I got out of the car, then helped her out. I picked her up, set her on my hip, then started walking to the front door. She was so light! I rang the doorbell, and the same woman answered the door, peaking her head out to see who I was. She raised her eyebrows at me, the fixed her eyes on Lexi, who had hidden her face in my neck.

"Oh, you found her again. Thank you so much! We were so worried!" The woman said, obviously being overly fake. She reached her hand towards Lexi, but I pulled back. "Thank you for returning her. I'm sorry this has happened to you again," the woman said, obviously not getting my hints. I pulled back again as she reached out for Lexi. She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion.

"I have some questions for you," I said, making she Lexi was still secure on my hip.

"Well, come on in. Mike!" The woman called out as she opened the door wider. The middle aged man came into the room. "Please take Alexa to her room, I guess she still hasn't figured out how to stay put."

Before I could move, Mike was by my side, his large hand gripping onto Lexi's bruised arm. She struggled against his grip and started whimpering. I didn't let go of her. "No, she can stay with me," I snapped as I pulled Lexi away from Mike, glaring at him. He looked to the woman for instruction.

"If you insist. This way to my office." I followed her into a small room with a desk and a couple of chairs. I sat down in one, Lexi still in my arms. "What questions do you have?" She asked.

"Well, was Lexi able to get out of the house?"

"Who?" she asked.

"Lexi. She likes that better than Alexa."

"She talked to you?"

"No, wrote it down."

"So she still doesn't talk to anyone," the woman said as she glared at the little girl in my arms.

"And that is just fine. How was she able to run away?"

"Kids always find a way."

"Why would she want to run away?"

The woman shrugged. "I don't know. We take care of all the kids here. Ungrateful, I guess."

"Where did all of her cuts from? They're all over."

The woman was speechless. "This really is private."

"Well, I was wanting to adopt her."

The woman laughed sarcastically, and I raised my eyebrows. Her eyes grew in shock once she realized I wasn't joking. "Well, um, that's great. I'll go get papers."

I couldn't help but be surprised. "That's it? You don't need to do any background checks or anything?"

"Nope, she goes home with you today," she said, rummaging through a file cabinet.

"Do you not care at all?" I was starting to get angry. Of course I wanted to take Lexi home now, but this woman didn't even act like she was the least bit concerned.

She dropped a stack of papers in front of me. "We have a lot of children here. There's no time for all of that uselessness. You want the girl, sign here, she's yours." I quickly signed the papers without another word, and stormed out of the building with both Lexi and her files in my arms, happy that Lexi wasn't going away to a bad home. I am so glad I saved this little girl.

I know this really sucks, sorry. It's been a long week. I didn't want to update, but there were only five chapter to this book, and I need to get it going.
