Demi's POV

The drive home was quiet. Of course, Lexi didn't talk, but neither did I. I was lost in my thoughts while still being focused enough to drive back home. I needed to go to the police. That was my final decision. I drove straight passed the house. I saw out of my rear view mirror that Lexi was pointing to it as we passed it. "We have to go somewhere first," I explained. She leaned back into her seat again and stared out the window. We were soon at the police station. I picked Lexi up out of the car and carried her into the building along with her papers. I walked in, and saw a front desk. I went up to it. "Excuse me," I said, getting the lady's attention. "I'd like to file a report."

"Okay, what's the issue?"

"Child abuse," I answered. Her eyes drifted to Lexi. "I just adopted her, I had the files right here," I said holding up Lexi's folder. "I'm pretty sure the people running the care home was abusive."

"What evidence do you have?"

"Well, the other night I had found her alone on the street, and took her back to the care home the next morning. She had stayed with me because it was really late. I saw a few bruises and scrapes, but I thought it was just because she was a little kid that had played too roughly one time. Then, last night, she came back to my house, cuts all over. I don't know how she remembered where I lived, but she did. She was all torn up, like someone had hit everywhere on her with a belt or something. They were fresh wounds that were still bleeding. I took her back to the care home today so that I could adopt her, and no questions about me were asked."

"Wait, you decided to adopt her today, and it already went through?"

"Yes. They didn't do any back ground checks, they didn't make me show ID. They just said that if I wanted her, then I could have her. I signed everything in here, which had already been signed by the owners in advanced."

"Okay, I'll send someone over there to check it out. If you don't mind, I'm going to look through these files."

"Okay."

"What's her name? Just so we can match it with the files."

"Alexa Turner."

"And can I see some ID? We're going to run it through some background checks." I pulled out my driver's license and gave it to her. "Okay, thank you. If you'll just have a seat, we'll finish as soon as possible."

I turned and found some chairs to sit in. A sat down with Lexi in my lap. She looked at me with worried eyes. "It'll be okay." She did a writing motion with her hand. "'ll be right back," I said as I lifted her off of my lap. I walked back up to the desk. "I'm sorry, but she doesn't talk. Do you have paper and a pen or pencil?" She gave me the supplies, and I returned back to Lexi, giving her the paper and pen and setting her up in my lap again.

She started scribbling something down. When can we go back to your house?

"Right after we're done here. It won't take too long." Lexi nodded and leaned into me. I wrapped my arms around her tiny waist.

Sorry this is so short, but hope you liked it. Tell me what you think so far of this story? What do you think should happen? It'll get better, this just wasn't a good update because I'm not in a very good writing mood, sorry. Thanks for reading!
