Demi's POV
I woke up to bright morning light. The events from last night came back to me. I opened my eyes, but I didn't see Alexa. I sat up, and looked around. She wasn't in my room. I got out of bed and looked in her room, but she wasn't there, either. Where did she go? Then I realized that I heard my TV on. I looked in my living room, and Alexa was sitting on the couch, watching cartoons. It was so cute! I quickly and quietly went back to my room and grabbed my phone. I came back, and took a picture. All you could see was the back of her head and the Looney-Toons on the TV. I posted the picture to instagram, then put my phone away. I sat beside Alexa on the couch, and she smiled at me. "Morning, bed head," I said with a laugh.
"Hey, you do, too," Alexa giggled. I ruffled her hair, and laughed as she did the same to me. God, I love her laugh.
"What do you want for breakfast this morning?" I asked. She put her finger on her chin like she was thinking. I threw my head back. "Don't make me cook," I whined.
"Donuts?" She asked in her cute little voice.
I smiled. "Yay, no cooking!" She giggled at me, and I laughed back at her. "Alright, well let's go get dressed then."
"Why can't we just go in pajamas?" she groaned.
"I like the way you think," I said before heading towards the door. She followed me, and we both slipped on some shoes. I went back to my room to grab a couple of brushes. I brushed my hair as I came back to Alexa, who was waiting for me at the door. "We at least need to brush our hair," I said, handing the other brush to my daughter. She took it and started to brush as we walked out to my car. We both got in, and I finished brushing my hair before starting to drive. I drove to a donut shop down the street, and we both got out of the car at the same time. I took her hand as we made our way inside.
"Do you want to eat them here or take them back home?" I asked.
"Home," she said. It surprised me. I thought she would whisper. She was always nervous when speaking out loud around other people. I'm happy she's getting more comfortable, though.
We got our donuts, then went back home.
I set plate out for both of us on my table, then I separated our donuts out. As we started eating, my phone rang from the living room. I got up and answered it, not looking at the caller ID.
"Hello?"
"Hello, is this Ms. Demi Lovato?" A man on the other line asked.
I took the phone away from my ear and looked at the screen. I had no idea who this number was. "Yes, this is. Who is this?"
"I'm calling from child care home services. We are aware that a Alexa Turner is in your custody."
"Yes, that's correct. I adopted her a few months back."
"Right, well we were just contacted by her father, Jacob Turner."
"Okay?" I asked, waiting for the man to continue.
"He is requesting to go to court with you to discuss getting custody over Alexa again."
I felt a lump in my throat.
"I don't agree with him getting her back."
"Ms. Lovato, because of the court request, I'm sorry to inform you that you will have to discuss it with him in court next week."
"That's not a lot of time," I said.
"I understand, although we can't change that. We didn't set the date."
I pressed my hand on my forehead in frustration. "Okay, thank you for calling," I said sarcastically before hanging up the phone. I knew I shouldn't be mad at that guy, but I was just so confused and frustrated. Everything was going so well, and this has to happen?
