Demi's POV
Only about 5 minutes into the ride home, Lexi fell asleep. She's probably the cutest little thing ever. She's six, but she looks so much younger. It surprises me. I really wish she would talk to me. I want to hear the sound of her voice. I want to know what it sounds like. I've seen a small smile, but not one where it's obvious that she's genuinely happy. She's a good little kid, and she deserves to be happy. She deserves everything that I am willing to give her, which is much more than she had before. I just hope she'll come out of her little shell soon. Besides, I haven't even been with her for a full day.
I stopped to pick up something for dinner when Lexi started to wake up. Finally her eyes opened up. "Did you have a nice nap?" I asked. She looked at me through the rear view mirror and slightly smirked, rubbing her tired eyes. "We'll be back home in a little bit, okay?" She nodded, then stared out the window. I turned on the radio during the drive back home, and one of my songs started playing: I Really Don't Care. I giggled at myself before getting Lexi's attention. "Hey, baby, do you know who this is?" She shook her head from side to side. "This is me." Her eyebrows raised in realization as she continued listening to my voice on the radio. "Is that cool?" She nodded with a small smile on her face. I started singing quietly to my song, then all of the other songs after that. One of the most awesome things about my life is being able to hear myself on a station that so many others listen to.
Soon, we were back home. We walked back inside the house together, and I put the food on the counter. "Are you hungry now, or do you want to eat later?" I asked. She started writing in her notebook. "I guess I should get better at yes or no questions, huh?" She flashed me a small smile before finishing her writing. She gave the book to me.
Can we eat now?
"Sure," I said, handing the book back to Lexi. "I guess all of that walking got you hungry, too." She nodded and followed me to the table, where I started unpacking the food. She climbed up onto a seat and sat herself down. After I put food on both of our plates, I sat down in my own seat. "Are you excited for your new clothes?" She smiled and nodded. That was pretty much all that was said as we ate dinner.
After we were both done eating, I cleaned up the table. Lexi helped as much as she could. Then, I brought her into the living room to watch some TV. Lexi loved it, but she couldn't keep her eyes open for very long. "Are you ready to go to bed?" I asked her. She nodded, then yawned. I got up and searched through the shopping bags that were still by the front door. I took out some pajamas and her new toothbrush. "This way," I said as I led her up my stairs and down the hall to the guest bedroom, which was now her room. I opened the door, and her tired eyes grew huge. "I guess it's pretty big, huh?" She looked at me and smiled that same, sweet little smile. "I know it's messy. We'll recognize when we unpack everything we bought today. We'll probably do that tomorrow." She nodded, and I led her to the bed. "Do you want to dress yourself?" I asked, placing the pajamas on the bed. She nodded. "Okay, I'll go change into my pajamas, then I'll be right back." She nodded again, and I went into my room to change. When I got back to Lexi, she was sitting on the bed waiting for me in her pink pajama set. "Let's go brush our teeth." She followed me to the bathroom. On the way to there, I pointed to my room. "If you ever need me, don't be afraid to go in there to get me, okay?" She nodded in understanding.
I put toothpaste on both of our toothbrushes, then started brushing my teeth. She followed my actions, and rinsed right after I did. I walked with her back to her room, and watched as she crawled into the big bed. I helped her get under the covers, then leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Good night, sweetie." She closed her eyes as I left her room, and made my way back to mine. I feel like a piece of my life that was missing had just been found. I didn't even know it was missing until today. I'm so happy Lexi came back to me.
I think their relationship is off to a good start. I don't know when Alexa will start talking, but what should her first words to Demi be?
