The door to my garage bursts open and incomes about twenty kids with a stressed-looking Kyle following behind them.
A frown pulls at my eyebrows and my mouth opens slightly with confusion and complete surprise. My eyes scan the crowd of kids in front of me and they stare back up at me with big eyes. They look to be from age six to around fifteen.
Kyle pushes past the kids and stands next to me. "What the hell is this?" I mumble to him not taking my eyes off of the little ones in front of me.
"Well, as you are not racing at the minute as you are pregnant, I thought that during your pregnancy that you'd like to perhaps begin teaching kids how to drive," What just came out of Kyle's mouth was something that I did not expect him to say in a billion years. I send him a look of, are you being serious? "Look, you've taught people before..."
"Yeah but they were adults who knew how to drive, not little kids..."
"I know, Nat, but you need something to do, something to look forward to, plus it would be good practice for when this one comes along." He raises his eyebrows at me and he has a glint in his green eyes.
"I don't know, Kyle, half of them don't even look a day over six, how are they supposed to drive cars?" I fold my arms across my chest.
"Go karts, I ordered them last week and this idea came with it, they can drive go karts around the track and you can teach them when to go slow when to go fast. I'm surprised so many turned up to be honest and their parents seem keen, so please, Nat, it will do you good." He tilts his head and I give in.
"Fine, I'll do it," I face the kids. "Right, can all of you follow me down to the track and we will sort you guys out from there."
The day so far has been one of the most stressful of my life. The littlest kids have been just driving around whereas the older ones seem to find it more interesting to smash into each other with the go karts.
The younger ones are getting more irritable by the minute and those older are finally getting bored. "Right! You lot group over here, we have half an hour left before your parents will be here and I have an idea of how to wrap off this week's lesson," I call them all over and within no time they are all in front of me staring. "Who fancies a racing competition?"
"Me!" Yells one of the little girls who has the biggest brown eyes that I have ever seen and has curly blond hair.
I beam down at her. "Alright then, please can you get into a line from youngest to oldest."
They do as I say and I section them all off into groups of four so we have five races in total.
I run the races and one person in particular catches my eye. It's a young boy, around ten, who won his race by miles. Many parents have turned up to collect their child and I go over to the boy who his with his mother.
"Hi, Natalie Henderson." I hold out my hand to her and she beams back at me taking the hand shake.
"Mrs Chalky, is my Tommy behaving because if he has been then..." Mrs Chalky starts but I stop her.
"No, no, Mrs Chalky, in fact quite the opposite. Your son seems to have quite a talent for racing, won his race by miles. Have you ever done anything like this before?" I tell them and Tommy shakes his head. "Well, I have to say you have something special there kid. Better than me when I was your age, I hope I'll be seeing you next Friday?" I give him a high five and a huge grin appears on his face.
"Don't worry I'll be here." He says and his mum kisses his head.
"Thank you, Miss Henderson." Mrs Chalky smiles.
