Hermione’s POV

I looked at my schedule. I had potions with Professor Slughorn first, then a free period. Great! I’ll do my potions homework then. I hopped out of bed, got ready, and I was about to go to the Great Hall for breakfast, when a hand on my shoulder stopped me. It was Draco’s.

“Yes, Draco?”

“Um, I was wondering what class you have first,” he asked me. I saw his cheeks flush, and I thought- ‘A Malfoy? Embarrased?’

“Potions, with Professor Slughorn. You?” I said.

“Me too. Hey, do you wanna walk down with me?” Draco asked.

I stared at him, and he looked at his feet.

“I mean- well, because we have the same class together, and well, I figured that if  we are gonna be in the same common room all the time, we might as well be friends?” he asked shyly.

“Oh! Okay. Well then we should get going.” I answered. “What do you have next? Do you like Divination? Are you doing Quidditch this year?” I asked curiously.

“Do you always talk this much?” he asked me with that usual Malfoy arrogance.

“Git.” I responded.

We walked into Potions class, late, and we sat at the only available seats- next to each other. Professor Slughorn started the class.

“Hello, everyone! Before we begin, I would just like you all to know that the people you are sitting next to will be your partners- for the rest of the year.”

I looked at Draco and sigh. ‘Why am I always with him? Well, I thought, It’s better than having no friends.’

After class, I walked calmly to the library to do my homework on veritaserum, the potion that makes you tell the truth. I found a book on it and I started skimming through it. I wasn’t watching where I was going, and I bumped into someone.

“Granger!” It was Malfoy.

“Sorry.” I mumbled.  I sat down on one of the chairs quietly

“You should be! Why am I always put together with you- you mudblood!” he snarled, a cold look in his stormy grey eyes.

Then I just snapped. I couldn’t take it anymore. I stared at him coldly. “Yes, you are correct. I am a mudblood. But I don’t see why you feel the need to tell me every day.”

Draco gave me a cold glare, and stalked away. I ran to the common room, choked out the password to Dumbledore, and ran into my room, crying myself to sleep, not bothering to go to any other classes. ‘Why did he do that to me?’
