"Excuse me, sir?"

"Johnathan. What do you want?" My father looked up from his paper. I could see the latest celebrities and wizards smiling and waving.

"Sir, um, I got a letter from the owl today. It's from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I was excepted into the new 'Exchange Student Program' there."

My father looked at me with his stone-grey eyes, and I suddenly felt the need to curl up into a little ball. No, John. You want this.

"Yes, I remember reading about that in the Oracle this morning. the Ministry of Magic could use a lot of work."

"Well, Sir, I was wondering..." I took a deep breath, hesitating a little bit. "Could I go to Hogwarts this year? It would be nice to go somewhere new, meet some new people-"

"No. you are going to Ilvermorny again this year. Your whole Quidditch career is riding on this year and next year. Scouts from different teams will be there. and I have connections, being a star Quidditch player myself."

it's all he ever talked about. You win one Quidditch World Cup and now you deserve to be in the Quidditch Hall of Fame.

"But-" I don't want to be a Quidditch player.

"I said no. That is final. Do not test me, boy."

"Yes sir," I said reluctantly. I shut the office doors and sprinted up the spiral stairs. as soon as I heard the door click shut, I let it all out.

"I don't want to be a Quidditch player!" I said angrily, throwing the letter onto my desk.

"Pippa, I don't want to be a Quidditch player." I picked up the jet black cat that had slunk in. she looked up at me with remorse.

"why can't he see that? Is he so blind from the fact that his oldest son might be gay that he doesn't care about what I want? Open your goddamn eyes!"

I made up my mind. I was going to that school.

"I want to go. Be a new person. nobody knows me there," I rummaged around, searching for the paper that I knew was on my desk. where did it go? I finally found a piece and wrote out a reply. I folded it up and tied it loosely around Pippa's neck, careful not to tie it too tight.

"Go to Hogwarts. Stick to the shadows, ok girl? Don't want Dad seeing this."

She nodded and faded into the darkness, becoming invisible. I got up and looked in the mirror.

I saw my reflection staring back at me, and the first thing I noticed was that my green eyes shone with a new light: independence.
