JOHN POV

The Hufflepuff dorms were nice. I had to give them that.

I woke up the next morning in an ivy-covered canopy bed. Even though we were in the dungeon, artificial sunlight filtered through my eyelashes. I yawned and sat up, taking a glance at each of the other four beds in the room. two of the others were asleep, and no one was in the final bed.

I gathered my toiletries and clothes, then headed to the attached bathroom. Putting on Hogwarts robes felt new and unnatural to me. It was weird to see a Hufflepuff crest emblazoned across my chest. I tried to shake off the first-day jitters in my chest as I pulled my curly hair into a ponytail. I dusted a bit of blush on my cheeks and I was finally ready.

Walking into the common room was like walking into a greenhouse. Vines covered the mustard-colored walls. a fireplace was roaring to one side, with black and yellow chairs surrounding it. I noticed a girl sitting on one of the chairs, reading a book.

"Eliza?"

"John? Oh, It's splendid to see you again," She smiled and motioned for me to sit in the chair next to hers.

"It's good to see you too. I had forgotten for a second that you were a Hufflepuff."

"It has the best common room out of all the houses, in my opinion. It's always so tranquil, except for when we are celebrating our Quidditch wins. It gets crazy."

"Speaking of Quidditch, when and where are tryouts? do I have to sign up?" I asked. I was not doing this for my father. I liked playing Quidditch when I wasn't forced to like it.

"Actually, I know the captain, Kitty Livingston. I can introduce you."

"Thanks, Liza."

"What are you doing up so early? It's-" She checked her watch. "7:00. Breakfast isn't served until 8:45."

"I could ask the same about you."

"well, I'm an early bird. For the longest time, I've gotten up early and gone to bed early. I'm not complaining about it though, especially since it comes with this silence and peacefulness every morning."

"That's true. I have a lot of siblings, so the summer mornings are a nightmare. Well, a morning-mare." Eliza giggled.

"I have many siblings as well, but they have all moved out already. It's just Angelica, Peggy, and I."

"It did seem like you guys were close," I said.

"Yeah, when you're all born one year apart, you tend to stick together. My sisters are my best friends."

"I only live with my father. My house has a very 'fend for yourself' environment."

"That's terrible." Eliza looked at me with empathy.

"It's not too bad. Gotten used to it. Most teenagers would die before they said this, but school is the best," I shrugged.

"Well, hopefully, Hogwarts lives up to your expectations."

"So far, it has a 4.5-star review on Yelp." I joked.

"What is Yelp?"

And so, I explained to her what Yelp was, and then I had to explain to her what google was because apparently, her father had wanted nothing to do with technology. And by the time I had taught her that Apple was not only a fruit, It was time for breakfast. My first day at Hogwarts had officially begun.
