JEFFERSON'S BIRTHDAY IS THE DAY AFTER MINE *dabs repeatedly*

I'll have macaroni and cheese to commemorate it 👏

(Update) I did in fact eat mac and cheese for dinner

JOHN POV

I woke up that morning with a good feeling. Even though my hair looked more like Jefferson's afro when down, I felt it in my gut that today would be a good day.

I hurried down the hall to the common room, expecting to see Eliza sitting in the bay window with the cup of tea she makes every morning. Eliza had been replaced by a shadowy figure. I stopped abruptly before I turned the corner, hoping that the figure wouldn't notice me. I begun to slink back towards the dorms quietly, but it turned and stared me in the eyes right as I took a step.

"John Laurens!" said the creature's squeaky voice. It emerged from the shadows, revealing its small bony figure, pointed ears, big eyes, and long nose. a tattered rag was its only source of clothing.

"Zodky has come to warn John Laurens. It is urgent," My father's house elf ran two me, waddling like a penguin.

"What do you mean, warn me?"

"Master speaks with Mister Arnold about John Laurens and friends and the International Wizard Association. Master wanted John to go to Hogwarts."

"Zodky, that's crazy. My father told me that he didn't want me to go. He sent me a Howler!"

"Master did it to be convincing."

"Are you sure?"

Zodky nodded fearfully.

"Ok, thank you for telling me. And please do not hit your head on the wall when you go back to the house just because you told me something you shouldn't have."

"Zodky will go now. Be safe, John Laurens." The house elf disappeared with a pop and a spark of light.

"I must be going crazy."

----

"So my father's house elf visited me today," I exclaimed, stepping in line with Alex and Maria on our way to Potions class. Maria had to go to her class, but she liked to walk with us. It was the first time I'd seen them all day.

"Your dad has a house elf? He's a terrible person," Maria commented.

"He really is, and Zodky started to warn me about him. he said something about him talking with someone by the name of Mister Arnold about the International Wizard Association? And that my dad wanted me to go to Hogwarts. But he told me no."

"Maybe your dad knew that even if he said no you would've gone anyway, and you were less likely to go if he agreed with it or even suggested it," Alex said, contemplating. "Reverse Psychology."

"But why did he want me to come? And who is 'Mister Arnold'?"

"I know the answer to your second question. Benedict Arnold is the founder of the I.W.A. But he's been in Britain, and if he weren't it would be all over the Daily Prophet. Why would he be in contact with someone from America?" Maria exclaimed.

"Maybe we should do some research," I suggested, tightening my ponytail. "I can try and look for clues at my house during winter break. It's a little ways away, but I doubt this library is going to have any information on an American Quidditch player."

"It couldn't hurt to try."

----

All throughout potions class, I kept sneaking glances at Alex. His tongue was sticking out of his mouth the entire class, and his eyebrows stayed furrowed in hyper-focus. I wanted to help him so badly, so that Snape wouldn't pick on him (despite being a Slytherin), but we were working independently today. He was right next to me, but I couldn't tell him that he had to peel the Shrivelfig, not poke at it with his wand.

"This time, everyone will be sampling their Elixirs, and if done correctly, will induce euphoria. Drink up, everyone," Snape said, probably knowing that Alex's plum purple potion-that was supposed to be yellow-would do some harm. Alex looked at his potion with a scared face. Snape can suck it. Alex is getting a good grade today.

Before Alex could take a sampling of his, I switched our potions when he wasn't looking and drank it. It tasted like fish and made me gag a bit in my mouth. I felt my skin get super dry and hard, then looked down at my arms. They were covered in shining green scales. What kind of potion did Alex make?

Meanwhile, Alex drank my bright yellow potion, and instantly there was a smile on his face. He was happy to see that his potion had done its job, and he turned to look at me. His eyes looked confused, but his smile was wide; his eyes told me exactly what I needed to know: I was a he-lizard.

"As you can clearly see, Mr. Laurens here did not properly brew the Elixir to Induce Euphoria. 10 points from Hufflepuff, you can come get the antidote after class. your homework is a two page essay on why it is important to add peppermint into your Elixir. Dismissed."

I had to stay a he-lizard for the rest of the day? If only Alex had created a potion that turned me into a he-turtle.

We all filed out of the classroom. Eliza wasn't there again. But Jefferson was.

"Hey, Laurens." I tilted my head back and groaned before turning to face him.

"What do you want, Jefferson?"

"I saw what you did, lizard face."

"And what did I do?"

"You switched the potions."

"So?"

"I'll tell Snape. And I know he doesn't take kindly to lying."

"This is literally the dumbest argument I've ever had the misfortune to be a part of." I had no idea where this newfound bravery was coming from. Maria's badassery had rubbed off on me.

"Suck it, Laurens. It being Alexander Hamilton."

My cheeks felt hot, and my scaled hands were balled into fists, but I had a retort that was waiting to come out... like word vomit.

"Swallow it, Jefferson. It being James Madison." I turned on my heels and ran to the courtyard, hoping that Alex and Maria had gotten me some food.

Jefferson's face was expressionless.
