JOHN POV

I shook off the feeling of dizziness leftover from my trip on the Portkey. I could still see my dad's fiery eyes as he watched me disappear.

Nothing could keep me from this, I thought. Even if I got a Howler on the first day. Wouldn't be the first time.

I had arrived in a dusty old tavern, a large backpack slung across my back, enchanted so it didn't feel heavy. The lights were dim and windows were scarce. Witches and wizards sat around the bar, drinking British wizard beer. This had to be the Leaky Cauldron.

"excuse me, do you know how to get to Diagon Alley?" I asked the bartender. He pointed to a door at the back of the tavern.

"Just knock on the three center bricks with your wand."

I thanked him and headed towards the back door. When I opened the door, I was greeted by a tall brick wall. Just knock on the three stones you are looking at. I tapped the stones with my pinewood wand and the wall folded in on itself like a closet door. It was like stepping into Narnia, but better. It was Diagon Alley.

The narrow cobblestone walkway seemed to stretch on forever. Shops were stuffed in between each other and were filled to the brim with new and old Hogwarts students getting this year's supplies. Wizards held stacks of books, brooms, and owl cages. the commotion was mesmerizing.

"Ok, ok, let's see... I need robes, books, a cauldron, and a standard potions set. Ooh, optional: bird, cat, or toad. classic witchy animals." hopefully I had taken enough money to buy everything I needed. I had quite a bit of allowance stacked up, so that should do the trick, but I couldn't buy anything if I didn't know where to go. I needed to find a native. Wearing jeans and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle t-shirt made me feel very out of place. I spotted a group of girls that I thought would be nice and went over to them.

The oldest wore a coral pink robe with a half-up half-down hairstyle in her curly dark brown hair. she was laughing at something that her raven-haired sister had said. she had pale blue robes and sparkly Saphhire earrings. The third sister wore a robe of bright yellow. her fizzy brown hair was pulled up in a high ponytail.

"Excuse me, do you think you could help me find the bookstore?" I asked. the three broke from their conversation and turned to face me.

"Of course! What's your name?" the yellow-clad girl said.

"I'm John. John Laurens."

"Well, this is Angelica-" she pointed to the tall girl with the pink robes "-Eliza-" the girl with the blue "-And I'm Peggy! Are you going to Hogwarts?"

"Yeah, It's my first year."

"You don't look like a first-year," Angelica observed.

"I'm a sixth year."

"Me too," Eliza spoke up. "but I haven't seen you around before."

"I'm actually from Ilvermorny, I came here as part of-"

"The International Wizard Association's new exchange student program! It's a great way to start extending an olive branch to different magic communities in the world and learn new ways of magic. I read all about it in the Daily Prophet."

"Angelica, you need to stop obsessing over the newspaper each morning. you read it before dad does, for goodness sake," Peggy said. "I'm a 5th-year Gryffindor, Angelica's a 7th-year Ravenclaw, and Eliza is a Hufflepuff."

"I was a Pukwudgie in Ilvermorny."

"That's the healer house, right? the one that represents the heart," Angelica said. Peggy rolled her eyes. I nodded. My dad had not been happy the day I had been chosen by the Pukwudgie totem pole. That was the first Howler I had ever gotten, and my friends hadn't let me hear the end of it for the rest of the year.

"we're going to Flourish and Blott's anyway, do you want to come with us? that's the bookstore," Peggy asked.

"Sure."

----

I spent the rest of the day with the Schuyler Sisters, which is what they told me to call them. After Flourish and Blotts, we went to Madame Malkin's Robes for all Occasions, Potage's Cauldron Shop, and The Apothecary. We then went to an ice cream place called Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour.

"Could I get a blueberry ice lolly?" Eliza asked. Ice lolly? what the fuck?

I laughed. "What the crap is an 'ice lolly'?" I asked her.

"I forgot for a second that you're American. It's this." She held up... a popsicle.

"That, is a popsicle."

"Ice lolly," Eliza said.

"British people have such weird names for things. like fries are called chips here? what are chips even called?"

"Crisps," Eliza answered.

"What the hell," I said in disbelief, taking a bite of my pistachio ice cream.

"Well, you Americans say bizarre stuff too. like taking all the 'u's out of words like colour and parlour." Peggy deadpanned.

"C-O-L-O-R. that's how you spell color," I exclaimed.

"You forgot the 'u'," Peggy responded.

"Peg, calm down. John, are you excited to go to Hogwarts?' Angelica interjected, changing the subject.

"Yeah, I mean it's a fresh start. And, bonus, my father is thousands of miles away in South Carolina, so I can basically do whatever." maybe be something else besides a Quidditch player.

"That's fun. Our dad is a big part of the Ministry, and since I'm in my last year, he's breathing down my neck about NEWTs." Angelica said.

"and mine about OWLs." Peggy groaned. "So not excited about them."

We talked more about Hogwarts, and then they had to go. I waved goodbye as I watched them walk away. Then again, I was alone. Fan-freakin-tastic.
