JOHN POV

October 28, 1993. Dear diary.

Apparently your 16th birthday is supposed to be over the top and flashy. I was all one for glitter, but when my birthday was concerned, I did not want any part of it.

"Happy birthday Johnny boi!" Eliza said cheerily, sitting down next to me. She'd been waking up late for a couple of weeks now and I couldn't quite put my finger on why. She said that she was an early bird...

"SHH! Eliza, tell nobody."

"Ok, ok. Happy birthday," She whispered.

"Thanks, I guess, but just don't really mention it. I'm not really fond of my birthday."

"That's not good! We need to have a party or something-"

"NO! Eliza, no."

She sighed. "Fine. But I am getting you a gift. Somehow."

Eliza and Maria were the only ones I had told about my birthday.

----

I tugged on the slider door, hoping that it was just stuck. The sun was beating down on me, and and after running around with my imaginary friends for a while,  I was in desperate need of water. It would've been great if I could get the door open.

"Daddy!" I knocked on the door.

"DADDY!" I yelled. The curtains were closed, but I saw my father's shadow cross the door many times. Why couldn't he hear me? I  hit my knuckles hard on the glass, pulling on the handle as hard as I could.

First he didn't let me have a birthday party, and now he locked me out of the house.

"I want water!" I said, banging my fists on the door. No answer.

So me, being a seven-year-old, started to cry. I had no knowledge of magic, so I couldn't use a spell to open it. My stomach rumbled and my throat felt dry. I laid myself down on the grass, curled up in a little ball.  I was hungry and thirsty and mad at my dad for locking me out in the heat. I had no friends, and I was forbidden to speak with my neighbors. I was alone.

----

I clenched my teeth together. Just the thought of that memory made me angry. He got drunk on my birthday and locked me out of the house. I slept in the tool shed, which was ridden with spiders and rats.  And then the next day he killed me for not being at the house.

"John, are you ok?"

"Fucking perfect." I ran off to my first class, Care of Magical Creatures. Sorry Eliza.

It was extremely easy to act as though it was a regular old day. When lunchtime rolled around, neither Eliza nor Maria said anything. It was funny seeing everyone act as though this day was a normal day, because they thought it was. And that was just how I liked it.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was quickly becoming one of my favorite classes. Professor Washington was a great teacher; he even started calling Alex 'son', much to his dismay.

"Today, class, we are going to be learning how to cast the Patronus Charm. It may take a while for you to be able to cast a corporeal Patronus, and some are never able to cast one at all."
