JOHN POV

I didn't like the way Alex was looking at Eliza, but there was nothing I could do about it. I couldn't assume he was straight, but when it came to Angelica and Eliza Schuyler, he was as straight as an uncooked spaghetti noodle.

He will never like you. The words Jefferson whispered to me played on repeat in my mind.

"Why are you friends with Thomas?" I asked him whist walking to the food. Although I seriously doubted the words he had announced at last night's dinner were true, I needed to make sure. I could never understand why someone would want to stand near Jefferson, let alone talk to him.

"Oh, he's not my friend, he was just being stupid," Alex responded. "How do you know him, anyway?"

"We went to Ilvermorny together. We were friends until the end of our first year when he started hating me." I responded.

"Why did he hate you? You don't seem like a very hateable kind of person." He said.

"I don't know," I said dismissively, trying to shut down the conversation. But I did know. I had liked Jefferson my first year. That's how I found out I liked guys. He'd made a big thing about it when I had tried to kiss him, and being 11, he told the whole school. Maybe he did know better, but all I knew from that moment forward was that Jefferson would never be my friend.

Two other people were currently at the buffet table, laughing together. One of the guys was the one with the 8 names, Lafayette, and the other was the bandana clad boy that McGonagall had called Hercules Mulligan.

"Bonjour again, Monsieur Hamilton," Lafayette said, walking up to Alex and me.

"It was Lafayette, right?" Alex asked.

"Oui. This is my friend Hercules Mulligan, he's a transfer from Nigeria. Is that right, mon ami?" Hercules nodded. he was almost as tall as Lafayette, with broad shoulders and a serious face.

"Hey." He said.

"Um, I'm John Laurens, from South Carolina," I said, inserting myself into the conversation.

"Nice to meet you, John. I would tell you my full name, but it gets tiring after saying it a couple of times." Hercules chuckled. "If you couldn't tell, I'm from Beaxbatons. In France." Where was Alex from?

"You are both Gryffindors?" Alex asked, gesturing to their red and gold robes. They nodded.

"I did not see myself as a Gryffindor, to be honest," Hercules said. "I'm more of a Hufflepuff like you, John."

"Hufflepuff's ok, It's just that my dad would send yet another Howler if he found out," I said. Crap! They weren't supposed to know about the Howler.

"That was your Howler? I thought it was that first year's." Lafayette asked.

"Um yeah, I was referring to a different time!" I lied. I could feel Alex's disbelieving stare boring into the side of my face. Stop staring at me Alex. you weren't even there!

"Laf? I think someone's waving at you," Hercules pointed off into the crowd.

"Oh, Oui. I see. Au revoir, mon amis. We will see you around!" Lafayette took a blushing Hercules by the hand and pulled him back into the sea of people. Lafayette had been here for a day, how did he already know so many people?
