JOHN POV
Seeing Alex in the middle of the crowd was almost like there was a spotlight shining on him. It hurt that I still saw him that way, but I couldn't magically change who I was drawn to.
I then remembered that Thomas and I were walking next to each other, and he explicitly told me to not talk to him after the train ride. I wasn't complaining.
Don't ask me how we got on a first name basis, I have no idea where that came from.
"We're at school now, so..." I looked at the ground.
"Way ahead of you, Laurens." I looked back up and he was already talking with another group of people across the room.
I smiled in spite of myself and entered the main hall, where I saw Eliza seated amongst the seated Hufflepuffs.
"Hey, Liza!" I greeted. She smiled up at me and pulled me down in the seat next to hers.
"Hey Johnny boi! How are you doing? I didn't see you on the train."
"I'm still mad, and I always will be. But, I'm more mad at what my dad did this past week. It's been a whole lot of crap in a whole lot of ways," I answered.
"Really? What happened?" She looked concerned.
"Excuse me?" Sitting across from us was James Madison, who was the one who had spoken. Remembering Eliza had told me she liked him a little while ago, I suggestively elbowed her. She blushed and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Hi, James," She said with a small wave.
"Hello, Eliza. You are John Laurens, right?" He pointed to me and I nodded.
"I want to ask you a question about Thomas."
Why would the cinnamon roll that is James Madison want to talk to me about Thomas Jefferson? I had seen them together a couple of times, and I was always confused as to why they were friends.
"Ok?"
"Is... he gay? I, um, saw you with him on the train and I thought you might be friends," He said shyly. "I kinda like him but he's been sending me mixed signals."
I was shocked. Yeah, Thomas had always been a dick to me about me being gay, but he was a lot nicer when I stayed at his house. When his parents weren't there...
"I honestly have no idea, James, sorry, though I'm 95% sure he's straight. I've known him for a while, though we're more like frenemies then friends, but I'm not quite sure. You'll have to ask him."
He looked anxious. "Oh. Ok. Thanks." He left.
"Mixed signals?" I wondered aloud. Was there a possibility that it was his parents making him act that way? I wasn't sure, but there was a chance I was right. It was just like the ideologies that my dad was trying to instill in me.
"Frenemies? With Jefferson? What happened during winter break? He's the one who-" Eliza started, her voice filled with awe. She was cut off abruptly by Dumbledore's back-to-school speech.
What was she going to say Jefferson did?
"Welcome back to school, students. I hope you all had a wonderful winter break..." Dumbledore continued his speech, and Eliza turned back to face me.
