Six Years Later
"Dada!"
"How about lunch," Leonardo said to Zayn, his barely one year old son who responded by flickering his big green eyes at him. "You like corndogs? I'm in the mood for a corndog."
Today Zayn was a little fussy. Leonardo had expected the toddler to squeal at the mention of corndogs but instead, he gave him an evil look. His full bottom lip jutted out, trembling in preparation to bawl all over again.
"Dio." The Italian muttered under his breath when the crying storm hit full force, he started rocking the baby in his arms saying some soothing words. "What is it now? Shhh your papà will be here any second, okay?"
"Dada." The toddler said in between tears.
"Yes, buddie?" Leonardo nuzzled Zayn's ear. "We're here for your sister's inter-schools football match, remember? Look, Mia is out there, you see that?" He pointed out to the pitch where Mia's soccer team was posing for a group photo before the official game had begun.
"I hope I'm not too late, am I?" Seth sounded almost breathless as he planted a kiss on Leonardo's cheek.
"Hey big guy." He squeezed Zayn's soft cheeks sending him into a fit of giggles.
"You're right on time. The game is about to start." Leonardo told his husband making him calm down.
"Oh thank God! I ended up being dragged into an emergency c-section, luckily there were no complications otherwise I'd have been stuck at the hospital until now. How's your guy doing?" Seth gestured to Zayn.
"A little restless but he'll be fine. I think someone is teething."
"Ouch." Seth instantly grimaced. "And how's my guy doing?"
"Your guy could really use a proper kiss right now." Leonardo sounded totally exhausted and Seth just had to kiss him. "He really took a toll on you, didn't he?"
"Nah, we have a perfect understanding for each other. Right Zayn?"
"Papà!" Zayn squealed leaning toward Seth who was glad to hold him.
"Someone's having his first banana today." Seth sounded ecstatic as he peeled a banana for Zayn.
Turns out Zayn had never had a banana before and he was happy to mash it with his small hands before actually eating it.
The atmosphere at the soccer field was electric. Seth immediately spotted Mia on the pitch in a purple jersey printed Mia 10 in bold white. Her school, William Hopkins Junior was playing against Redwood Middle School. The field was not overly packed even though it was an impressive turnout.
