I leaned against Zane's chest and closed my eyes. A sigh left my body as I thought about the day.
"It's over." I said softly, "It's all really over."
Zane stroked my hair and controlled his breathing, "That's all that matters."
A small smile stretched across my face. Maybe he was right. Maybe life was going to be normal again. Maybe I could live on through my life without fear instilled in me.
"But what if it's not?" I wondered out loud.
"It is." He reassured me.
We sat there as still as we could as we both listened to yelling and screaming. From what I could hear, Connor had woke up and the police were taking him away. I wondered if they were also looking for Kyle. He was as guilty as Connor was.
Then, as expected, there was a knock on my door. Before either of us could give them the okay to come in, the door opened.
"Rae Carnaby and Zane Lennons. A word?" A policeman poked his head in.
"Of course," I replied.
The policeman sat on the edge of my bed with his notepad and pen in both hands. Zane's grip tightened around me, and I sat up just a little bit straighter.
"The first question," He said, clicking his pen, "When was Connor first introduced into your lives?"
I looked up at Zane, signaling for him to speak first.
"A few months ago," Zane replied rather quickly.
"Alright ... where were you two when you met him for the first time?" The cop wondered.
"Maine," I replied, "We were in Maine when we met."
"Maine ..." The cop looked confused, "As in the state?"
"Yes." I replied sarcastically.
Zane hid his smile with hand for a few moments, and quickly returned back to a stern face.
"Is there anyone else involved with Connor in any way? If so, I'm going to need names." He scribbled things down in his notebook.
"I'll have to think on that one," Zane pondered.
"Kyle Reed." I responded immediately, "He lives down the street."
The policeman looked at me, "Is that the only one?"
"No." Zane replied, "Victoria Turner, and Ashley Miller."
"Those are the criminals." I said, "But some people that may know more about Connor personally are Tate and Maddie Cohen."
"Oh?" The policeman seemed intrigued, "Continue."
"Maddie and Tate used to be friends with Connor." Zane added, running his hands through his hair.
"Someone that knows a lot about Victoria and Ashley would be Jessica Davis. They all used to be best friends. Jess also knew Kyle. She dated Nick before ..." I told him.
Zane rubbed my arm. Nick was a touchy subject between us. I still felt terrible about what had happened at the hospital.
"Great, thank you for those names." The policeman thanked us.
"Of corse." I said somberly.
There was a lot of tension in the room. I think that the cop noticed that. He stood up, smoothed his shirt, and tipped his hat towards us.
