Just a quick note before I start this chapter: Thank you so much for all of your support! The voting and commenting is a good way to encourage me! ;) Also, I made the stupid decision to work on three books at once, so please be patient with me for updates!
"I'm dying." Maria said simply. Lyra nodded.
"I'm going to be a demon."
"Having second thoughts?"
"No." Maria wasn't surprised at her answer.
"To choose two beings over perfection forever? You are insane." Lyra laughed, somehow making it very sophisticated. Maria shrugged.
"Will I be able to talk to them before I die?"
"I'm not sure, you're pretty far gone now. It'd be a miracle."
"I want to."
"Well, if you believe I guess. I don't know how to do that."
"Well, what if you go down there? Can you pass on a message for me?"
"I suppose it could work, I wouldn't become a demon since your body hasn't died yet."
"It would be like a possession then."
Lyra nodded, then looked confused.
"But, how do you trust me enough to give me your body? I have done this before, at least once or twice."
"Why would you go around possessing people?"
"I got bored waiting for you to come along."
Maria shrugged in reply, accepting this answer. She would have done the same thing. "As for the answer to your question: I'm going to be a demon soon. I guess it doesn't really matter what happens to my body before it dies. Besides my body is so weak right now anyway, what could you do with it?"
Lyra chuckled. "You really are absolutely insane."
"Yeah yeah." Maria waved a hand in the air as if to say, "so what".
"Now, what do you want me to tell them?"
"Can you tell them... tell them..." Maria was suddenly at a loss for words. Lyra understood slightly how she felt.
"I think I understand. I'll figure out what to say." Lyra stepped forward and placed a hand on Maria's shoulder.
"Good luck." Maria whispered.
"Don't use your litttle sight trick unless absolutely necessary. I think it speeds up the dying process."
"Alright."
Lyra closed her eyes and exhaled evenly. Then she dissipated into a mist that fell to the ground.
Maria looked around the meadow, alone.
-------------------
Ciel had found the stairs and in his haste to get down them he nearly fell. He checked every room except the one at the end of the hall. Now walking, and barely breathing, he turned the knob on the door and pushed it open. He was surprised William didn't lock it. (In actuality Willaim didn't lock it because the transformation was already underway and there was no way they could stop it.)
Maria was immobile on the large bed in the center of the room. She was as pale as the impeccable white of Mei-Rin's apron. The rise and fall of her chest was barely noticeable.
"Maria!" He was by her side in a second, grabbing her hand and squeezing, trying anything to get her to open her eyes.
"Sebastian!" He called in a panic, knowing his butler would be able to do something, anything for her.
