Chapter Six

Maria remained in bed for more days after that, her mind drifting in and out of consciousness. It was hard for Sebastian or Ciel to keep her awake for long. She would wake up, think about what had happened, and would faint again.

At the moment she was awake, and seemed relatively calm, the "relatively" meaning a slight trembling that seemed constant in her body. No matter how many blankets Sebastian had wrapped around her she was still shaking.

The Kitten had just been thrown into a river and left to drown.

Maria had to completely rethink her religion. Would she be going to Hell now, was there a God she could believe in? Her soul was hers now, right?

She also needed to completely rethink what she was going to do next. Go back to the Queen? She wouldn't be able to do much without William, so she would end up being a nuisance to her Majesty.

I would be thrown out of the palace. Then where would I go?

Ciel reassured her many times that they - meaning Sebastian - would track down William and find out what was going on.

He wouldn't have gone very far, after all I am his supposed "lost love." Maria thought to herself as she sipped quietly on some tea.

Her shoulder felt despairingly bare. The seal had disappeared, and every time she looked at it she felt more and more scared.

At long last she could calm down and actually walk around the house, but only when another person was with her. She felt sort of bad for always keeping Ciel from his work, but he assured her that it was fine.

She knew that everyone was treating her like glass, and she hated it. They moved cautiously around her, spoke gently, and didn't ask questions. They were treating her like a fragile glass vase, ready to break at any time.

One night, in the middle of the night, Maria awoke to a noise. She didn't know where it came from, but as she looked around her room cautiously she saw something in the window.

It was William.

For some reason fear shot through Maria instead of anger. It took her a moment to realize that fear was what she should be feeling. This wasn't her bound-in-a-contract William, this was a free demon.

She opened her mouth to scream to alert everyone in the manor but was stopped short by William shaking his head. The message was clear: Be quiet or you and everyone dies.

He beckoned her over to the window, and to her surprise and shock she found herself getting out of bed and going over to him. It was like she couldn't control herself. With shaking hands she unlatched the window, and stood aside mutely as William stepped inside.

"Ah my Lady how I have missed you!" William acted like nothing was wrong as he took hold of her hand and kissed it. She jerked back a little, slipping her hand out of his grasp.

"Where have you been? Why did you break the contract?" Maria finally found her voice, and she had questions to ask.

William looked slightly hurt but answered anyway. "I did this so that we can finally be together, Lyra."

Lyra? "Be together? W-Why?"

"Because we love each other!" He placed his hands on her shoulders and gripped tightly, enough to make her cry out in pain.

"Stop!"

"Let us run away, Lyra, and then we can be free!" William's eyes were crazed as he searched her fearful hazel ones. Suddenly they narrowed and he looked like the species he was: a demon.

"Or will you choose the other one?"

"Other one?"

"Sebastian Michealis." It was spoken with hate, in a leering tone that made Maria shiver. He tightened his hands on her shoulders again and she cried out slightly.

The door to her room slammed open, and glowing pink eyes shone in the doorframe. They took in the scene: A demon holding a girl's shoulders quite tightly, the girl trembling in fear and in pain. The girl looked up as the door opened, and her hazel eyes met his, begging for help.

Mine.

With a growl the demon released the girl before shoving her behind him. She fell to the ground, crying a little in fear.

Sebastian clashed with William and the two began to fight. A few thrown punches later William was already on the move, leaping out the window and streaking away. Sebastian started to follow but stopped at the window. Lady Maria needed his help. He moved over to her and gently scooped her up and placed her on her bed, controlling his demonic urges to chase and kill his prey.

"Are you hurt, m'lady?" He asked gently before placing a finger on one shoulder, silently asking permission to check.

Maria reached up and pulled the nightgown sleeve over her shoulder, exposing the pale skin to the demon butler.

Sebastian frowned in sympathy towards Maria and anger towards William. Already her skin was bruising, and no doubt the other was as well. She was a lady, unexposed to danger up until now. There was no way she could go head to head against a demon, let alone a human man. She shouldn't need to be exposed to danger either, and yet here her own butler - the only person she had trusted for years - was the one to hurt her.

"I shall go get a salve for the bruising." Sebastian declared, ready to get hurry and get it quickly. Her shoulders would be tender for a while.

"No." He stopped in surprise when Maria spoke. He turned and looked at her curiously, already halfway to the door.

"Excuse me, m'lady?"

"No. I don't need it." Maria slipped back under her covers and pulled them up over her head.

"Goodnight."

Sebastian looked worridly at the figure under the covers before reluctantly replying, "Goodnight, m'lady."
