His phone rang.

His phone rang after school hours.

When his Problem Children were in a public place.

When Midoriya Izuku was in a public place.

"Your glare won't answer the phone, you know that, right?"
Said glare shifted to the oversized cockatoo as he pointed angrily towards the still ringing phone.
"Whenever I get a call, It's always about a certain Problem Child so I'm bracing myself."

"Aww, c'mon Shouta, it can't always be Midoriya!" Mic chuckled as he leant back in his chair. Shouta rose an eyebrow and picked up the phone, putting it on speakerphone as he kept eye contact.

"Hello?"

"Hello, is this Mr. Aizawa?"

"Speaking."

Mic shifted to sit back up in his seat, sweating slightly under the harsh gaze as the formal tone of voice registered.

"My name is Dr. Inuya, I'm from Dagoba hospital. I'm calling about a Mr. Midoriya Izuku, there was an incident with a villain and he is in critical condition."

Shota could've sworn his heart stopped. He hated being right.

'A villain? Critical condition?'

"I'm on my way."

Iida Tenya was the stern type, have faith in the rules and the rules will never fail you, he had thought friends were secondary and less important.

He knew better now.

He had never heard Bakugou sound like that before, it had terrified him more than he had liked to admit. It had made him jump to every frantically barked order with everything he had. The class had trained for situations like those, but in this situation, he didn't know what to do.

Todoroki was sat on the floor in a corner with Bakugou sitting across his crossed legs, the blonde had his head tucked into the others neck and his bloody hands gripped the taller boys shirt tightly. Todoroki had wrapped his, just as bloody, hands just as tight around the smaller boy.

So he left them. He didn't bother them about the hospital rules, he stood guard just past arms length and anyone that came close, spoke to him first. Even his teacher wasn't exempt, though the way the man stalked over to him did make it hard to keep his position.

"What. Happened?"

Dutifully, he began his debrief.
"Sir, we were at the mall when we noticed a crowd gathering, we made our way over to see what was happening when Bakugou called out and asked for crowd control to which we instantly moved to do so."
Iida shifted slightly,
"Not long after he ordered me to guide the paramedics and it was only then I saw Midoriya."

The sight had been horrifying, Todoroki had been holding an unconscious Midoriya while Bakugou had been crying, blood was everywhere soaking Midoriya's clothes, his face was so pale-
Shaking his head, Tenya cleared his throat.
"He had been wounded badly, I don't know who injured him so, neither of them have spoken and I have let them be for now."

Aizawa placed a hand on the blue haired boy's shoulder,
"You've done a good job Iida, let me speak to them." The moment of hesitation before he recieved a nod flared irritation and pride in equal measure but all the teacher did was pat the boys shoulder once and make his way past.

Aizawa Shouta was more a man of action than words so he just plopped down beside Todoroki and threw his arm over his shoulder, hand resting on top of Bakugou's head, and waited. With how they looked he was surprised when Bakugou spoke first, his voice hoarse and quiet.

"Why is it always Deku?" His grip tightened in Todoroki's shirt, "H-He wasn't even doing anything."
Shouta ran his fingers through the spiky blonde hair as he thought. He kept forgetting that they were only kids.
"There isn't a reason. Villains don't care who they attack and why they just-"

"Bullshit." Aizawa pulled back a little in shock, staring at Todoroki,
"That wasn't a coincidence," heterocromatic eyes stared coldly into his teachers black orbs, "The villain that attacked Izu was Shigaraki, the man who lead the attack at the USJ."
Aizawa felt his stomach drop. The implications of it being him to attack Midoriya, recognising him from then when he was sure that the green haired boy remembered nothing of what had happened, wasn't good.

"We can sort this out, the most important question right now is, does Midoriya know why he was attacked?" Todoroki shook his head while Bakugou scoffed, sounding a little like his usual self, though still hoarse,
"Of course he doesn't, damn nerd can't see what's right in front of him."
Aizawa nodded his head thoughtfully,
"No one told him?"
Both boys shook their heads.

"Sir? The doctor would like to speak with you." Turning his head Aizawa saw Iida and a man in a white coat,
"One second." Turning back to the boys he patted Bakugou's head once before pulling away, "You two should get as cleaned up as you can, Midoriya wouldn't want to see you two like that." He waited for them to agree before hoisting himself to his feet with a silent groan, he was too old to be sitting on the floor.

The doctor looked serious, but not as serious as he could've so he wasn't too worried as they walked out of earshot.
"It was touch and go for a while," the doctor began, motioning for Aizawa to follow him,
"The villain's quirk ate through his skin and into his esophagus which lead to heavy bleeding. We managed to get him stabilised with a quirk that transplants tissue with a zero percent chance of rejection. He's going to have trouble speaking and eating for a while. Plus a nasty scar," the doctor warned with a grimace,
"Most of the left side of his neck was gone but hopefully with Recovery Girl it will look better."

They stopped outside a door and when he opened it Aizawa laid eyes on his problem child. He looked small on the bed hooked up to a heart monitor, pale and unmoving as he was Aizawa could've mistaken him for being dead if it wasn't for the reassuring, regular beeps.
"When will he wake up?"

The doctor moved to the foot of the bed and pulled out a chart, looking it over before replying,
"Within a few hours, we've done all we can but please let us know if you have any questions or concerns."
Shouta could only nod as he sat in the chair beside the bed, taking the small, limp hand in his. Once the doctor was gone he let his teacher facade drop, his shoulders slouching as his head dropped forwards, his free hand carding through green curls shakily.

"You gave me quite the scare kid." he mumbled, blinking rapidly and taking a deep breath. There were so many implications to what had happened, why Shigiraki attacked Midoriya out of his whole class and it could only be linked to what had happened at the USJ. That meant he had to tell the boy what had happened, what he had done.

A shiver ran up his spine when he remembered the absolute massacre that they had just managed to keep out of the press and when Midoriya showed no signs of remembering, how he had threatened his students to silence, not that he needed to, they had agreed instantly but his problem child had been through so much and he wanted to protect him, even if it was from himself.

'Looks like we won't be able to protect him for much longer, shit kid Bakugou was right, it is always you.'
