What did I do?
Why do I have to bargain to breathe the air God gave freely?
What did I say?
Who made me less of a human than you are?
I am Black not SinWould I always have to work twice as hard as anyone?
Why should my skin colour merit me for torture?
Did I really break the law?
Am I behind these bars for doing wrong or for speaking up?
I am Black not SinWhy do you wipe your palm after you shake me?
Are we all not made of clay?
Were we all not carved by the sculptor?
Do I not deserve what you get?
I am Black not SinWhy do I have to fight for equality all the time?
Do you know I feel the same emotions you do?
Do I scare you?
Do you feel happy when you see the anguish in my eyes as you break me?
I am Black not SinWhy does my colour anger you?
Why does this gift of mine, this skin of mine, call for hate?
Can you learn to love and accept me?
Will you ever see me as a human, just like yourself?
I am Black not SinWould a time come when I'm not treated as nothing just because I'm coloured?
Would the world ever notice my talent instead of my colour?
Can I believe that a time will come when I can be comfortable in my own skin and not be treated like an animal?
I am Black not SinYes I am coloured
Yes I am Black
Yes I am different
And yes I am humanSo hear me now,
I am Black and proud of my skin
I will not change myself to fit in
I am not going to allow anyone to belittle me
I have talent and the world will see me for who I am
They will see me beyond my colour. For I am Black and certainly not Sin.
