"Sunshine?"
"Hm?"
Virgil heard a little laugh over the phone. "Princey? I know that laugh. It's just me, you don't need to be nervous."
"Well, I think I do."
"Why?"
"Because... I was gonna ask you if you wanted to hang out with Janus and Re."
"Ha, no. Not even if you're going to be there too, which you obviously are."
"Why?"
Virgil stopped himself from sighing. "Because I've no interest in meeting Janus ever. Never again."
"But, well, me and Re thought-"
"I don't care what you and Remus thought, I'm not going to try be friends with Janus again or whatever. He was the one who left me in the dust, not the other way around."
"I know but-"
"But nothing. I'm not going to apologise or whatever because it's not my fault. And I'm perfectly fine with broken ties staying broken."
"Sunshine-"
"No. I'm not going."
Virgil heard a sigh from the other end of the line. "What?"
"Nothing."
"No, that was definitely a something sigh. And a bad something sigh at that."
"I just... Why are you so stubborn?"
"I'm not stubborn!"
"Well..." Virgil could practically hear Roman wincing. He took a breath and counted to ten in his head.
"I'm not stubborn, Roman, and I'm not going with you to meet Janus."
"Please, Sunshine."
"No. I've said no, Roman. I don't exactly care about Janus and-"
"Virgil, he's been kicked out."
Virgil's mouth fell open slightly. He'd known Janus' dad was bad but... to kick Janus out of his house...
"Is he okay?"
"Yeah, I think he's fine. Just shaken. He's living with me and Re now."
"No, I asked if he was okay? Has he been hurt? I swear to God-" Virgil cut himself off.
"He... was hurt when he came here, I think. There were a couple of bruises on his face. And he's been crying. Re and I just thought that seeing you might, you know, cheer him up a little?"
"You greatly overestimate me and Janus, Princey. We'd be having an argument within five seconds of seeing each other. I'm not the best option for cheering him up. If anything, Remus probably is. They're probably the closest."
"Right, okay. You... you sure?"
"Yes, Princey. I'm sure."
Virgil looked at the contact in his phone.
"I must be insane." He thought. "Well, better insane with self-awareness than sane without it, right?" His stupid 'joke' didn't even make him laugh even a little bit.
"Yeah, I've got to be going insane." He said before clicking on the contact. How did he even know they would pick up?
"Hello?"
"Um, hi. It's Virgil."
"Virgil? You're seriously calling me?"
"Um, yeah."
"Any particular reason?"
"I just... wanted to check to see if you were okay."
Janus laughed. "Right. After... 13? After 13 years, you're checking to see if I'm okay. This has to be a joke."
"Or it's me going insane, who knows." Virgil said, laughing a little. He'd kinda missed talking to Janus, how had he never realised?
"Yeah, probably. Anyway, why d'you want to check up on me? And it's probably going have to be quick before Rem bounces in and steals the phone from me."
"No way, you're still with Remus?"
"Yeah." Janus laughed a little. "Why is everyone so surprised by that?"
"Because he so... all over the place and you're just sit down in a corner and read."
"Well, opposites attract, I guess? Anyway, out with it. Why're you calling me?"
"I just... remembered that, um, you got kicked out and... sorry."
"No, it's fine. No one seems to be able to stop bringing it up." There was something in Janus' tone that had changed.
"Sorry for being one of those people."
"It's fine, Virgil."
"Are... are you okay, though?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Dad's able to walk free again but he'll never find me. I'm living far away and I'm coming down to London soon to see yours and Roman's play. What's that about, hm?"
Virgil rolled his eyes. "Trust you to change the subject to something you can ship twistedly."
"It's my speciality, Virgil."
Virgil laughed. "There's nothing going on, trust me."
"Yeah, in a show where you're both playing love interests-"
"I'm the main character, he's the love interest."
"Whatever you say, Virgil."
"Hey!"
"I'm not saying anything. But come on, you had to know something."
"I knew nothing, I swear! All I knew was that I had gotten the part I wanted and that someone else was playing opposite me. I had no idea it was Princey."
"Princey? Wasn't that what you called him when-"
"No, quiet. I do not like him."
"Sure, sure."
"I don't!"
Janus laughed. "Sure. Whatever you say."
*Realising that I have to finish writing Mischief after this*
No! No, I don't wanna. No happy from Mischief Before Its Time.
So yeah... I may not write Mischief after this. Sorry.
