"Oh fuck." Virgil sighed.
"Going kinda posh with the accent, aren't we? Especially for swearing." Roman asked, not looking up from his script.
"You nearly done with the memorising?" Virgil asked, avoiding the question.
"Nearly."
"Need any help?"
"No." Roman said, inching a little bit away from Virgil. "And it's a bit late for that, seeing as I already kinda asked you early."
"Yeah... nevermind." Virgil crossed his arms and hunched his shoulders. It was a far cry from the Virgil Roman was used to. Not that Roman noticed or anything. He was definitely very focused on his script.
"...Princey? You good?"
"Hm? Uh, yeah." Roman said, jumping. "Why?"
"Cause you've been staring at that page for the last... three minutes?" Virgil said, checking his watch. "Is there, like, a line or something you don't understand or something?"
"You're really trying to not be snarky, huh?" Virgil nodded.
"Yeah. It's very difficult."
"Hm, guess it must be. And, uh, no. Just zoned out a little."
"Right... Anyway, um, can you remember when the dress rehearsal is? Cause I know I wrote it down somewhere but I'll be damned if I can remember where."
"Yeah. I think it's either Saturday or next Monday."
Virgil let his head drop forwards and sighed. "And I repeat 'oh fuck'."
"You, er, you don't like dress rehearsal's do you?"
"No. No I... I really don't." Virgil bit his lip. "They just always go wrong and then I get really worried for the actual night and I forget my lines and-"
"Wait, you've acted before?!"
Virgil looked up at Roman's surprised face and nodded.
"Since when?"
"Since I moved." Virgil said. "Dad said I was spending too much time in my room, which is big talk coming from him, and I ended up getting pretty interested in the Drama Club after school and... yeah." Virgil laughed a little. "Actually, to tell you the truth, it wasn't the actual Drama Club, more like someone in it."
Roman closed his script. "I'm listening."
"Oh now you don't mind not memorising your lines."
"I like to pry. And I've finished anyway. So, out with it."
"Jesus Christ." Virgil ran a hand through his hair. "Well, he was called Jack. And he was demi so I thought maybe, maybe I have a decent chance with him. Cause we were... decent friends. But he ended up dating a kid in the year above. And that's my great high school story."
Roman laughed before clapping a hand over his mouth. "Sorry. Didn't mean to laugh."
"No, you can laugh. It's pretty pathetic." Virgil said, a laugh of his own breaking through his words. He looked up at the ceiling, laughing quietly and grinning. Roman really couldn't get enough of his smile.
"What the fuck?" He thought. "Stop it, Roman, you're being creepy and weird."
"So, what about you?"
"Hm?"
"Who was your crush for the rest of high school."
"You mean my boyfriend?" Virgil raised an eyebrow. "Hey!"
"I'm not saying nothing." Virgil said, putting his hands up.
"Okay, fine. Uh, oh God, what was his name? Think he was called... Edin or something. It was a really weird name."
"Like you can talk, Mr Roman Winston."
"You can't talk either. But anyway, he was one of your 'sporty kids' and he was... pretty cute but a grade A asshole."
"You fell... for a grade A asshole?" Virgil smiled like he was biting back a laugh. "That's even worse than falling for an anti-social emo."
"I never actually talked to him, in my defence. He just... he had freckles, okay? And freckles are cute."
"Bit first-impressiony, isn't it, Princey?"
"As if you don't completely base first impressions on looks too."
Virgil rolled his eyes. "Okay fine." He said, smiling a little begrudgingly. "We're both as bad as each other, deal?"
"Yeah, deal. Definitely."
Neither of them noticed that there was a bit more light in the other's eyes. As if being more than civil to each other was something they'd missed.
All of these endings are weird so I'm just gonna stop saying 'weird ending, I know'. I want to change the warning on some chapters from 'crying' or 'feeling like you're not good enough' to 'feelings are hurt in this chapter'. Would you... would you kill me if I did that? Cause I think Imma do it.
Bye,
Blaize
