Chapter 21: Birth

Chapter 21

Katniss P.O.V.

When we got here neither one of Annie or I were fully dilated. They put us in different rooms.

Peeta is with me, he's really nervous. He fluffs up my pillow.

"Peeta will you relax?" I laugh. "We're at the hospital, I OOWW!"

"It's okay Katniss, you're strong", Peeta says. "You've done this before, when we had the twins... Or no, you weren't awake, you almost died, oh and I'm gonna shut up now".

That only makes me laugh more. Yeah Riley and I almost died. No wonder Peeta is nervous.

"But I'm not dying this time, and neither is our little boy, and he doesn't have a twin to get his neck around another umbilical cord", I say.

"I've read that it has happened that baby's can be strangled by their own", Peeta says nervously.

"Peeta stop scaring yourself", I say. "If the baby's umbilical cord was tied around his neck Dr Sullivan would've seen it when we got in".

Peeta nods.

"Yeah I guess".

"Owwwww", I yell.

This hurts so much. I really do think that this pain can kill me.

"Oh Peeta", I whine.

He hurries up to my side and takes my hand.

"I'm here sweetie, I'm here", he says and starts stroking my hair. "I'm right here with you, I know it hurts, I know, but you can do this. I love you so much".

"Shut up! You don't understand how much this hurts", I say, in an angry voice. "You don't".

Peeta backs away a little.

"Yeah because I don't know anything about pain do I?" He asks, looking at me. "I just spent a few months being tortured, including electrical shocks right into my flesh, I know exactly nothing about pain, you're right".

Oh my god. I wasn't thinking.

"Peeta I'm so, so sorry", I say, looking at him my eyes tearing at the thought of what Peeta went through. "I wasn't thinking, I'm so sorry".

Peeta closes his eyes and nods. He opens his eyes and look at me. He takes my hand.

"It's alright Katniss", he says. "You're in labour, you're allowed to forget about things".

"No not these kind of things, I'm not and I'm so sorry", I say.

"Katniss it's okay", Peeta says, stroking my hair again.

"No it's ooowwwww not!" I say through the pain. "I really deserve this pain".

Peeta looks at me. Shaking his head.

"Don't say that Katniss", he says.

"But..." I get interrupted by the door that opens.

Doctor Sullivan comes in, followed by our midwife.

"Hello, how are you feeling Katniss?" She asks.

"Like a horrible human being", I mutter.

"Katniss", Peeta says.

"What?" Dr Sullivan asks.

"Nothing", Peeta says. "She's just in a lot of pain".

"I'm..." I start but Peeta puts his hand over my mouth.

Dr Sullivan laughs.

"I love being your doctor", she says. "It makes me really believe in true love".
