Toni slowly drove by the house she once called her home. Flashbacks of her early years full of misery appeared.
The slapping, abuse, name calling and constant unpleasant sex acts forced on her by men twice her age. The smell of drugs being cooked in the kitchen and sold out the back door.
"No. No. No. I can't do this shit." Toni turned around quickly almost wrecking in the process.
"I'm so sorry." Toni threw her hands up apologizing to the person that was now behind her honking their horn.
Toni took one more look at her past and saw the asshole who ruined her. Time seemed to stand still as their eyes locked. Toni quickly looked away, speeding down the road.
"I thought he was dead!"
Toni hit the steering wheel as she looked in the review mirror. She only decided to reach out to her family because she thought he was dead. Toni put her vehicle on cruise control as she got on the interstate trying to relax.
Toni's phone rung snapping her out of her thinking. She answered seeing her husband's name pop up.
"Hey sweetie!" Kenny said causing Toni to smile.
Toni pulled into the driveway and hung up the phone as she got out. "I know damn well you didn't just hang up on me?" Kenny asked as he opened the front door wildly.
"No need to talk on the phone since I was coming in the house. What's for dinner?"
Toni brushed pass Kenny quickly. Normally he would follow her but decided to mind his own business. Things had been odd between them for awhile and it was getting worse by the day.
"Kenny what's for dinner?!"
Toni yelled as she pulled her heels off. She waited and got impatient from the silence. Angry and just being fed up with everything she encountered earlier she stormed downstairs looking for Kenny.
"Kenny! Where are you?"
Toni checked everywhere and couldn't find him. She finally spotted him outside by the pool on his cellphone. Toni walked out the patio door and marched straight up to him.
"Hey I got to go. I'll call you back."
Toni squinted her eyes suspiciously. Kenny pulled her into a tight embrace peppering kisses all over her face.
"What do you want?" Toni asked laughing from his silliness.
"Why when I show you affection you think I want something?" Kenny looked away. "But yeah I do need a favor. I have to meet with Ju's lawyer and need you to meet a potential assistant."
At the sound of Ju's name, Toni rolled her eyes in disgust. After all this time and death Kenny was still trying to help Ju. Kenny wanted her to be name to be vindicated. He wanted Ju to be the face of battered women who found the strength to fight back.
"What happened to the old assistant that I picked out for you? He was decent." Toni replied.
"Yeah decent at everything except working. Mark was always late, always on his phone, and that had me always fucked up."
Toni looked up at Kenny seeing him getting frustrated. "Okay. I'll go. Let me go get ready."
Kenny left the house heading to his new office. After his father and sister dying he decided to make his permanent office in a different building. The old one had too many bittersweet memories.
"THERE YOU ARE!" Kenny turned around faking a smile. Ju's mother, Cynthia had been around since Ju's last couple of months in prison.
"Hey Ms. Cynthia. I didn't know you were here?"
Kenny didn't have much of a relationship with Cynthia. She always disliked him and his mother which prompted her to keep Ju away from their father.
"Yeah. I need to speak with you about this attorney you hired? He's terrible. My poor child is dead and he won't let her rest."
"Well we're trying to let the world know about abused women and the struggle they face when they finally fight back."
Cynthia looked at Kenny with disgust.
"No! You're just like your father ready to use people for your own gain. What are you getting out of this?"
Kenny narrowed his eyes at Cynthia before walking away.
"Leave now on your own or be thrown out. Don't come back here speaking to me crazy ever again."
Kenny sat at his desk staring at the skyline. Many thoughts came into his mind about everything. Cynthia arriving and Ju giving up hope and killing herself. What if Ju told Cynthia about what happened that day in Vegas?
Across town Toni sat at a local Starbucks waiting on the potential new assistant. The company was taking a new approach to the public giving anyone and everyone a chance.
"Hey there baby doll." A sketchy voice said making Toni's eyes widen. She turned around slowly seeing the devil himself.
"W-what are you doing here?" Toni asked slightly above a whisper. She was afraid, nervous and speechless.
It was Troy. He was older now but still had that look of evilness. His eyes scanned over Toni's body making her feel like a helpless little girl again.
"I'm here to tell you that you need to hire Norah. Business has been slow and she hasn't been bringing in her share. She's not as cute as you and your mother so she needs a real job." Troy said grinning.
"You're a fucking creep. How in the hell do you live with yourself? Aren't you tired of harming and hurting innocent girls?"
"How in the hell do you live with yourself? Does Kenny know EVERYTHING about the accident?"
Toni looked at him making sure to not back down. She refused to let Troy do her wrong anymore.
Troy got up, "Norah will be to work tomorrow at 8. See you later baby doll."
"Fuck you bitch." Toni said as she tried to gather her thoughts.
Toni knew she had to play this smart. She would hire her little sister help her gain confidence so she would finally get away like her. Then blossom into a beautiful young lady.
But first she had to figure out by the morning how she would explain to Kenny that she had a whole family.
