I awoke to the sounds of screaming.
"They've breached the gates!"
I hopped out of the bed and cal followed me quickly. we grabbed our weapons and ran to the place where the voice had come from.
The nursery.
I walked into the room and gasped. Standing in front of the cribs was Beth who was fighting off three Walkers.
"Don't let them get the babies." Carl said as he cocked his gun.
A flash of the first day that I came here came through my mind. Back then, Carl had been the biggest Jack Ass ever and told me that Beth, and Daryl, and all the rest of the group would let the Walkers take the infants if they ever made it through.
Today was the day that they did it.
The Walkers finally breached the fence that surrounded the prison.
I looked at Beth when the memory came back. I knew by Carl had been being sarcastic back then, but I never realized how much.
Beth was risking her life with three Walkers to save two children who weren't even hers.
A voice snapped me out of the memory,"A little help, Joce."
The Walker that he had been trying to shoot had turned at the last second and tackled him. At this moment, he was wrestling the thing on the floor, dodging the bites that would be fatal if they hit.
I grabbed my gun, aimed it, and shot at the freak of nature. All of its weight crashed onto Carl.
I helped lift the corpse off of Carl. Beth had taken down one Walker and was trying to give the last Walker a small headache with her knife.
I raised my gun and aimed it at the thing, but soon realized that I couldn't get in a shot without hitting Beth too.
Suddenly, she screamed out in pain. The Walker had chomped down on her arm and was holding on.
Carl and I yelled out in surprise.
"Do it," Beth screamed,"I don't have anything to live for anymore. After seeing what these things can do, I don't want to be one. Save Jacob and Judith, and yourselves. Shoot."
"No,"Carl said, his tears making his voice thick.
"DO IT!"
The tears were sliding down all of our faces as the Walker chomped down harder and moaned.
Before another cry could escape Beth's lips, a gun shot hung in he air.
Carl looked at the fallen bodies. He then moved past them and grabbed Judith and with a little struggle, Jacob.
"Watch my back, okay?"
I nodded and we moved through the doors and out of the prison to find Glenn and Daryl.
There were many Walkers in the doorway and outside of the prison. We shot them and continued on our way down the road and into town.
Nobody said a word.
Until I saw a huge herd of Walkers coming. I told Carl to move away and then I heard an arrow fly by my head.
Daryl and Glenn were running up behind us.
"Where's Maggie?" I asked when I saw that Glenn's eyes were red and puffy.
Daryl shook his head,"Beth?"
I shook mine.
Daryl sighed and said,"I think we have to split up. There's something wrong with the Walkers. There's too many of them."
"No," Carl exclaimed,"We've lost too many as it is."
That made me think of Key, Allie, Denise.
"Are they still alive?" I asked.
Daryl looked at me, but not in my eyes,"They were the first ones gone. Glenn and I got up this morning and the Walk-"
"Okay," I said with dismay.
Daryl sighed,"We need to know what's going on with these things. Are we gonna split up?"
Glenn gave a distant nod and took Jacob out of Carl's arms.
"No,"Carl said.
Glenn placed Jacob on his hip and looked at me,"Joce, you're with me. Carl with Daryl."
"No,"Carl and I exclaimed in unison. As an instinct, Carl grabbed my hand.
"Nobody's going off alone and we're not sending two children off by themselves to face the Walkers."Daryl said with a stern voice.
Carl squeezed my hand.
"Let's go,"Glenn said as he grabbed my hand and pulled me to the opposite direction.
Carl's collar was grabbed by Daryl and they went the other way.
Slowly, our hands unlocked, and soon, I didn't see him anymore.
