I awoke next to Carl in the tent. He was still asleep. I watched him.
When he slept, there was no nervousness or pain in his face.
Just peace.
I looked at how the blanket was placed on him. The only part of him that was visible to me was the collarbone up.
His features were perfect.
Suddenly, I heard a sound. It wasn't the sound of the Walkers or even Glenn or Daryl. It was a constant pitter patter that I hadn't heard in years.
"Carl, get up." I said as I shook him.
"Hmmmm," he groaned as his eyes fluttered open and the nervousness returned.
"Look outside."
We both got out of the blanket and moved to the opening of the tent. Carl unzipped it and we took a peek outside.
It was exactly what I thought.
Rain.
Cold, falling rain in Atlanta,Georgia. After all of these hot, squelching days, we finally got cool rain.
I wondered what the water would do to the Walkers.
The tent across the clearing opened and I saw Daryl and Glenn step out of their tent. In their underwear.
I looked at me and Carl and did a silent comparison of us and our friends. Carl seemed to have thought the same thing because he smirked at me.
The two men came out of the tent and started to frolic in the rain. They threw puddles at each other and then let the rain wash it off of them.
Carl and I watched. Carl grabbed my waist and pulled me towards him.
I felt secure and was about to put my head on his shoulder, when he pushed me out if the tent and in the rain.
He came out after me and started to splash puddles.
I bent down and flicked some back.
Time went on and eventually, all four of us had been involved in a full fledged puddle war.
After the war was over and we depicted a clear tie, we were completely dirty. I started to let the rain wash the dirt off of me.
Carl came up to and out one hand around my waist and the other in his hand.
"May I have his dance, m'lady?"
I laughed,"You may, kind sir."
We laughed and galloped around the clearing for a while and then sat down.
Glenn and Daryl watched us and Daryl winked as they went back in their tent.
A shiver shook through me and goosebumps formed on my arms and legs.
Carl pulled me into a hug and led me into our tent.
Our hair was plastered to our heads and we were both shivering. I crawled into the sleeping bag and Carl followed.
We lay down looking at each other.
"You had fun?" Carl asked as he started finger combing my hair.
I nodded,"I'm just cold."
He nodded and moved closer to me. I lay my head on his chest and listened to the sound of the rain as I felt the steadiness of his breathing.
"You know, I've been thinking lately."
"About what?"I asked.
"About how my life would be different if I hadn't met you. My parents would both be dead and there would t be anyone for me to connect with personally. I connect with Glenn and Daryl but not like with you."
I nodded.
"I also thought about all of he people that we lost. They were all painful, but if I lost you, I wouldn't be able to survive."
I looked up at him,"I feel the same way."
He looked down and kissed me.
"Hey, are you dry yet?" I asked after we separated.
He shrugged and we both climbed out of the bag.
We found our clothes that lay astray all around the tent floor. When I had all of my clothes on, I was still shivering.
There was nothing for me to do because Jacob was using my jacket as a crib.
I started to finger comb my hair when my lip started shaking from the cold.
Carl glanced at me and I tried to hide it.
"Are you still cold," he asked.
I shrugged.
I didn't really want him to be worried about how hot or cold I was. I should be grateful that it's raining because in Atlanta, we rarely cold. The majority of the time, there was sweat coming down our faces.
He came over to me with a sweatshirt with our school's mascot on it.
"Take it."
All that he was wearing was a short sleeved T-shirt and jeans.
"I can't," I said as I looked at my long sleeved shirt.
He rolled his eyes,"You're colder than me. I insist. Take it."
"Thank you," I said as I took the hoodie.
I pulled it over my head and pulled it down. It was a so long that it went past my butt.
I continued to finger comb and then split my hair into two pieces and pulled them forward. I pulled the hoodie up and sat back.
Carl pulled out a comic book from his small bag and I watched him read.
He had told me about how he lived comics, but I never understood why.
Looking at the peace and homeliness of him and the book helped me understand. He could leave anything that was bothering him and go to a place of fantasy.
I got up and crossed the tent. I sat beside him and rested my face on his shoulder.
Together, we read the book and I understood everything now.
