Plea To Humanity

I stand here before you to represent a new generation.

A generation of peace, of love and equality;

A generation that inherits

Our forefathers' and foremothers' fight -

A fight that is not a physical battle,

But instead, one of the mind.

No matter who we are,

Who or what we identify with or as,

Who we support politically,

What religion we are,

What the unchosen color of our skin is,

We all deserve perfect equality.

There should be no fight:

To find peace, we must lay down arms

And extend a hand to our fellow man.

Too much division separates us from one another;

And as President Lincoln is quoted as saying,

"A house divided cannot stand."

Who is this house?

Everyone around me,

From the tallest giraffe to the smallest mouse;

A beautiful rainbow of cultures, smiles, eyes and hands.

Together, we can be strong;

Together, with the house of the American people,

The house of every person on planet Earth,

The house of every twinkling star in the galaxies beyond.

We must become of one mind in our fight for equality,

For justice, and yet, for peace.

Everyone bleeds red and no one is above the law.

We've seen what it takes,

A strong system taken down with nothing but a child's words,

That final straw that broke the camel's back.

Diversity is beauty;

Unity is peace;

Friendship is happiness;

And human rights are universal.

We need to stop creating mundane controversy,

Arguing to simply argue, with no further goal,

And start to heal, helping the other side,

Bridging a gap between worlds.

I believe it can be done,

And I'm calling for a team of bridge-builders

To help me stitch together the seams of time

That were so unjustly and cruelly torn.

My generation is the next group of leaders,

We're going to lead when all these old people are gone,

And how we lead is going to set the idea that our children will see.

Do we want to keep the wounds bleeding

For generation after generation?

While we have the supplies, and the tools,

The words and the people, the voices of a new generation,

We will mend this broken heart.

The broken heart pumping broken blood

Into the heart of a screaming newborn baby,

Into the heart of the grumpiest elder-person.

Come on, humanity, we can do this.
