19: A Night to Remember
“Waking up from this
midsummer night’s dream,
I still wonder many hows and whys
were left untold.”
I accepted his gift because I want to repay his kindness of not letting me go home alone last time. Kahit na nasanay na ako na umuwi nang mag-isa, hindi ko pa rin maikakaila na nakakatakot ang Maynila lalo na kapag dis-oras na ng gabi.“So you’re telling me na nag-first move na si Dean? AS IN? FINALLY?”
“W-Wala, wala,” humahangos niyang sabi. “Masaya lang ako.”
“Huh?
“Baliw!” she exclaimed and throw me her small heart-shaped pillow. . . Ako agad ang first supporter niyo.”
While stroking the pillow, she explained, “He said to keep it a secret, Shel. Kilala mo naman ako, ‘di ba? I keep promises.”
“Guess so.” Napangiti na lang ako nang mapakla.
I wasn’t annoyed. I am upset. It is too late before I could connect all the threads. After all, Dean liked me when we were in high school. I liked him, too. On our graduation day, he was about to give his gift to me but he suddenly put it back. And that simple action pushed back my esteem to walk towards him.
I was there. But he didn’t see me.
And now that I was right inside his circles, he didn’t see me again.
I wonder if he’s blinded by my disappearance that he forgot how I look like or he intend not to approach me first and waited for the right opportunity.
“Wala na tayong magagawa. Dae.
“So, ‘di mo na siya gusto?” she asked.
I looked straight at her. “Hindi na.” And paused to scoop another ice cream to my mouth. “Pero gusto ko ulit siyang makilala. ‘Yong bagong siya.”
“Naku, naku. Alam ko ‘yang mga ngiting ‘yan, Shel.” She suddenly stood up and raised her spoon, like a mother giving a lesson to her daughter. . .”
