"and where were you all night," sirius questioned immediately as james rushed in late for dinner looking like a completely mess

his hair was all ruffled up, his hands smeared with ink, and he looked as scattered as his brain felt

"the library," james answered cooly gaining his composure as he sat down. he knew he had nothing to hide but he wasnt in the mood for a sirius black interrogation

"turning into moony are we?" sirius joked nudging remus

"s'not a bad thing you know," remus mumbled his mouth full of food

james rolled his eyes while forming a small devious grin, "and how was your evening?"

sirius smirked and pulled the collar of his shirt down to reveal a fresh hickey on his collarbone. he looked rather proud of it

"nice work moony," james joked giving him a wink

remus buried his flustered face in his hands while peter sat in quiet agony growing uncomfortable with the topic at hand

"and you pete?" sirius asked trying to be polite

"yea, erm it was good." peter said quickly

"so prongs, were you really all alone in the library? or did you have company?" sirius teased wiggling his eyebrows

james gave him a wink as he filled his plate with more food. he found himself eating enough to give remus a run for his money

"evans?" sirius exclaimed eagerly

"wrong," james cried. "try again"

"mckinnon?" sirius tried again

"no"

"mcdonald?"

"still no"

"merlin! then WHO," sirius groaned frustrated

"like i said i was alone," james smirked. "well it felt like i was, he was practically invisible"

"so its a he," sirius cried his brain turning back on and starting to find out this mystery boy was

"you didnt," remus blurted. "godric! prongs! you're such a prat."

"what did he?—oh" pete asked but quickly realized who james had been with

"tell me theyre joking," sirius demanded looking slightly amused but a bit hurt. "tell me theyre wrong"

james stood up slowly backing away towards the door to the great hall

"potter," sirius stood up ready to follow james

"sirius he came up to me," james called as he ran out the door into the corridor while sirius chased him

"james fleamont potter!"

"i swear" james added still making a run for it. "i swear pads on my life, i swear!"

"youre dead potter" sirius called from behind him

*  *  *

it was afternoon the next day as james was heading to the library accompanied by sirius who refused to let him go alone

"you know we just sat in silence the whole time right?" james whined. "i dont see why i need a chaperone."

"prongs, hes my baby brother. you cannot argue your way outta this one," sirius replied as they took a seat in the same back corner james had sat in the day before

"but you trust me right? you do believe what i said right?" james questioned sincerely. he'd start to actually feel bad if sirius was genuinely suspicious of him

"course," sirius answered honestly. "but its just different, he still feels like my responsibility."

james nodded gently as he opened up his divination book wanting to get it out of the way first

sirius however sat there with his arms crossed patiently waiting for regulus to appear. growing more and more restless, his foot tapping became louder and louder. one thing to know about sirius black; he cannot sit still to save his life

james threw sirius a look tell him to stop squirming around in his chair. if it were anyone else hed have look up and said 'are you serious' but he learned long ago to never say that in front of him. all youd get if you did was that sirius black smirked follow by 'no im sirius' which james had no patiences for today

"where the hell is he," sirius asked fully aware neither of them knew and it was a rather pointless question

"late?" james suggested moving on to his transfiguration work. "how am i supposed to know!"

sirius scoffed, "a black is never late."

"really," james groaned sarcastically. "you sure your a black by blood."

"sadly," sirius sighed amused

"well, you sure do make a fine potter." james cheered

"better than you," sirius joked

james just rolled his eyes and moved on. you couldnt win an argument with sirius, even if you were right. hed argue and argue and argue until you got so confused and frustrated you let him win to save your sanity

an hour went by before either of them said anything. sirius had given up waiting and was attempting to do his own work while james got a lot done. in the last two days he was the most studious hed been all his years at hogwarts

eventually, growing tired of the silence, sirius brain stormed a sassy comment

"i think my little brother is standing you up," sirius teased leaning back in his chair

"who knows," james replied softly. "maybe he just forgot."

sirius leaned forward his eyebrow raised, "that kid doesnt forget anything. how else do you think he survives so well?"

"well i dont think he has the rebellious soul that you were so blessed with," james answered grinning. "it must be loads easier when you actually do as your told."

"whats the fun in that," sirius smirked

"yea youre right," james shrugged. "theres no fun in it at all."

sirius patted james on the back in a brotherly fashion throwing in a wink

"and for the record pads," james started. "regulus flaking on me doesnt hurt a bit."

he lied, well he was more confused than hurt. but it occurred to him that maybe sirius was why he didnt show. or he did actually forget despite sirius's protest about the possibility of it

james wouldnt dwell on it, however he did grow a bit worried for the younger black

after another hour or so james and sirius headed off to dinner completely disregarding the whole incident. it was filed under G, for garbage
