a/n: this is going be a long and bumpy chapter, prepare yourself and im sorry in advance. just trust the process, okay?

regulus stared at his packed trunk sitting on his bed. everything was in its correct place; bed made, clothes packed and folded neatly, books stacked in alphabetical order, and he had on his best suit, his hair was perfect. it was all spotless, up to black standards. he stared at the engraving that read R.A.B, regulus arcturus black. he stared at the forest green walls, curtains and bedsheets

immense guilt was an understatement for how he felt in the moment. he knew what he was about to do would break not only james' heart but also sirius' heart and probably petes and remus' when he really thought about it. but he saw this as a necessity, something he had to do, his only option as of now

it was by far his worst lie yet. he never intended to escape to the potters like he said. he never intended to hide under the cloak slipping right past his mother. he lied about it all thinking he was protecting james and sirius and well himself when it came down to it

if orian or walburga ever got word of his relationship with james, his stay at the potters, and his change of loyalty, they would stop at nothing to get regulus back in their hands and under their control

secretly he had owled his mother requesting he return home via flu powder, claiming it was the safest method. this way james stood no chance at stopping him. walburga was all for it and so was orian. it was arranged with dumbledore shortly after and kept a secret

he took one last look at his dorm and his trunk and though to himself

the noble and most ancient house of black; toujours pur. always pure regulus, always pure

youre protecting him. everything will work out, just be their perfect son, their true black heir, and sirius and james will be safe again

you have to keep deceiving them, its the only way. they have to believe without a doubt your loyalty lies with them

you cannot escape, nothing will work. they wont let you go, not like they sirius go. you have no escape, you stand no chance

you must play the part reg, give them a show, make it flawless and leave them without a trace of doubt, be an actor once more

he wiped the tears of his face quickly. show no emotion. he smoothed out his suit and took one last look at his hair, still perfect

he grabbed his trunk and quickly made his way to dumbledores office, making sure not to be seen by anyone, where he would return to number tweleve grimwald place

now he stood in dumbledores office face to face with a phoenix but no dumbledore yet. the man was not as timely as others thought

"ah, youre here." the headmaster said appearing out of nowhere

"yes sir, 9:30. just like you said," regulus replied with a small smile

dumbledore picked up his bucket of flu powder and came closer to reg, "i assume youve traveled this way before?"

"yes, many times sir." regulus said promptly

as regulus reached for a handful of the powder dumbledore pulled the bucket away

"you remember the terms of this deal?" he asked narrowing his eyes slightly

regulus nodded quickly growing impatient, "of course sir. you have my word."

dumbledore smiled as he moved the bucket back into regs reach. he picked up a handful of the power and made his way to the fireplace

he stood within it and took one last look around him before saying, "number tweleve grimwald place." with perfect pronunciation
