"common prongs," sirius cried. "think about it, wed be legends!"james chuckled, "cant it wait? moony and i already have a month of detention."
"yea, exactly how did you manage that?" sirius questioned still unaware of what james and remus had done
remus and james shared a knowing look a grin growing on both their faces. once they stopped laughing at the memory they started to explain
"well," james sung. "we sort of—"
"we let a bunch of cornish pixies loose in the dungeons," remus interrupted getting right to the point. "you know cause snivillus sabotaged our potions in class that day."
"that slimy git," james groaned
"and neither of you invited me? okay i get it you dont need padfoot anymore," sirius complained turning his back to them dramatically
"oh shove off," remus rolled his eyes pulling sirius back around. "you were just busy with detention from the last stunt we pulled when prongs was feeling impulsive."
"fine," sirius huffed. "but never again, okay? we are a team! you know. one for all and all for one."
the boys continued to walk while they waited for peter to finish his last detention in this go around of punishment
after years of dealing with the marauders and their pranks the professors mutually agreed to split them up during detention
as they continued down the gravel path sirius explained more about his newest idea for a prank while remus helped fine tune it and james listen eagerly taking in the chaos
"look pads, its reg," remus pointed out stopping in his tracks suddenly
"is he? crying?" sirius asked looking around trying to find the right angle
"ill be back," james announced before rushing to regulus side and way before sirius or remus could protest
as he came closer to regs he slowed down not wanting to startle reg
"hey," james sung softly appearing from behind the tree
regulus sniffed, "oh hi."
he was now rubbing his face to dry his tears up and put on his signature 'regulus black mask' that nobody saw through, except james
"you okay?" james asked squatting down next him
regulus shrugged, "i dont know how to explain it."
"we dont have to talk," james told him. "it hasnt exactly been our thing anyway."
"we can just sit and enjoy each others company, you know." he added
regulus smiled softly, "i do want to talk to you about it. blimey i really do, im just— i dont know how exactly."
james took a seat next to reg still facing him. he leaned back on his arms and gave reg a soft smile as he tilted his head to the side like a confused puppy
"you could start by telling me how you feel?" james offered
regulus chuckled, "definitely not happy, thats for sure. i feel about as far from happy as one could be."
"yea well, nobodys happy all the time. its like impossible," james commented
"its just so much pressure, more now than ever. i dont where i stand or if i could even hold my ground if it ever came down to it," regulus confessed
"i think im very bitting off more than i can chew these past few weeks," reg went on
james looked at him with great empathy and an even greater amount of sympathy. he was well aware of regulus's horrible situation; being the new black heir, having to hear all the things his parents had to say about his brother, everything thats expected of him, and the simple fact that he was far too young to be involved in this; they all were
"you may not think youre a good person or brave in any sense but," james began. "youre strong beyond measure. im in awe at you, regulus black. and everything you do despite the circumstances."
"i should be doing more," regulus mumbled sulking
james sighed, "no. youre just a kid. we are all just kids. stop expecting yourself to be anything but."
"its easier for you to say, theyre monsters james. monsters," regulus responded his volume rising
james sat up suddenly, taking regulus hand in his with a gentle touch, trying to be conscious of regs past with physical contact
"hey hey," james coed. "im not accusing you of anything and im not criticizing you either."
"i know, i know," regulus sighed. "i just dont think i can handle letting them down."
"physically? or you just cannot stomach the guilt?" james questioned
"well," regulus hummed slightly amused. "i sure as hell do not want to be on the receiving end of my mothers curses but youre right, i also cannot handle the guilt id feel. even if i know i did the right thing."
james couldnt help it, he needed to have physical contact with reg. he shifted and laid his head in regulus lap peering up at him with a soft and kind expression
"i think youre going to make history, reg. i can just feel it," james admitted
regulus smiled, "how do you always manage to see something worth while in me? im rotten."
"there you go with those lies," james shook his head with a soft laugh. "you dont have a truly bad bone in your body. you want people to think you do, but you dont."
regulus's hand found its way to james's hair twisting a piece around with his finger. james found it relaxing and made his stomach do summer-salts
"i hate you," regulus chuckled. "i bloody hate you potter and your optimistic horse crap."
"nah, you dont." james beamed. "you filthy lair."
