the prank!: its not entirely clear when in fifth year it happens but its works with the plot so..

the full moon went the complete opposite of every single one to date. james swears something felt off from the moment he met sirius and pete

sirius was quieter than usual. he wore a look of composed of regret, rage, and anticipation. he made many remarks about someone 'getting what they deserve'

although it was unusual for sirius to say such things the night of full moon it was not so unusual for him to say in general. he used the saying often but rarely on these nights. he usually spent full moons worrying himself sick about remus

after pete froze the whomping willow him and sirius headed down the tunnel while james stayed behind claiming regulus was stopping by. it was the only good excuse he could manage in the moment

but regulus was not the person who showed up. it was actually severus who appeared to james' surprise and soon to his extreme horror

"what are you doing here?" severus called approaching james wearing a puzzled look

in the distance james heard remus howling. the transformation was beginning. poor moony. it always sounds and looks so painful.

bad news he thought soon after becoming more aware of sirius' cruel plan

"you cannot be here," james said rushing to keep severus as far away from the tree as possible

"but sirius told me to-" sev began to say as he tried to get closer to the tree by pushing his way past james. but it was no luck. severus was not physical match for a quidditch captain

"what has he done," james muttered to himself still working to prevent severus from moving closer. he was really putting up a fight

remus was still howling and it sounded as if he was getting closer and closer with every howl

"what has who done? sirius? is this another on of your pran—" severus asked raising his voice

"i dont know what sirius told you but you could get killed if you are here," james scowled low

"killed?" severus cocked his eyebrow. "blimey loony lupin is a werewolf."

"sod off, so what if he is?" james shot defensively stepping closer to severus. "he wouldn't hurt a fly if he could control it. and you know it."

"but he cant and thats the problem. dont you realize how dangerous this is?" severus asked his tone sincere

james huffed, "look i know its dangerous. but he gets locked up. the scars, on his arms, his face, those are from him clawing at himself every month. he doesnt want to hurt anyone, hed rather hurt himself, and he wont hurt you as long as you stay away."

"what are you invincible? he will hurt you too when hes like that. surly you remember learning that," severus snapped growing annoyed with james

"quit it with the god complex accusations, okay? look theres more to it than you know. he wont hurt me when im—" james paused. am i really about to admit this to him?

suddenly severus eyes grew wide with fear and horror, his mouth falling open. moony, james thought instantly

"run!" james insisted. "now go!"

severus took out running back towards the castle as james turned into a stag and helped sirius ( padfoot ) steer remus back into the tree. first they would have to calm down the wolf, which would be a long shot since the wolf considered itself the leader, the alpha for them all

the next morning was rough to put it into simple terms. remus was still asleep as sirius and james sat by him in the hospital wing. pete had went to the dorm to get any amount of sleep possible

the silence was becoming too loud and almost unbearable

james looked at remus for awhile. he looked so peaceful laying their. no fresh scars, completely unaware of the nights events, and he looked happy if thats even possible. he watched his chest rise and fall slowly

he turned his attention to sirius who was sitting in a chair resting his elbows on his knees, his head resting in his hands as he too stared at remus. sirius looked terrified. james assumed it was because he had finally realized the gravity of what hed done. he also looked sad. a kind of sadness that told james he fear he was becoming everything he swore hed never be

typically james would have held sirius tightly and reassured him that he was not a bad person. however right now all he could think to do was yell and scold and scream at sirius because how could he do such a thing to remus

how could he ever imagine putting blood on remus' hands when all remus has ever wanted was to keep them clean

"sirius what in merlins beard were you thinking?" james asked him speaking at last. "you could have gotten him killed!"

"the point," sirius grumbled with an eye roll

bloody prat james thought internally

"get your head out of your ass black! this is remus, our remus, your moony. did you ever think hed forgive you for setting him up to become a killer?"

"look you dont know what happened and you dont know why i did it," sirius yelled standing up. "so dont try to play dad or moral compass. i dont fucking need that from you right now."

sirius was pacing at the foot of remus bed. it was no use arguing with him when he was like this. he was too emotional to let go of his ego

james sighed angrily, "sort your shit out pads. before you bring someone else down with you."

"prat" sirius mumbled

"git" james shot

"tosser"

"pillock"

"wanker!"

james stormed out of the hospital wing furious and afraid he had just lost his brother and his best friends all because sirius was a stubborn posh boy who always had to have the last word
