"you're relentless prongs, you know that?" remus said during their nightly stroll around the hogwarts grounds

a few minutes prior to their walk james added another failed attempt of asking lily out to his list that only seemed to grow longer

he found it hard to think of any really good reason she wouldnt go out with him. 'youre a bully' shed tell him but rightfully so since severus could never mind his own business either. 'youre too arrogant' shed add and well he saw every reason to be. he was top of their class, excellent in everything he did, quidditch captain, how could he not think highly of himself. 'its called confidence evans' hed tell her before she walked away fed up with him

but there was always that eye roll she gave him. the same eye roll he saw his mother give his father whenever they playfully argued. he saw the way she had to make a conscious effort not to smile at him. he never truly thought it was a lost cause. to james potter, she was just in it for the long game

"she'll come around, just you watch." james assured them, although it was meant more for himself

he had started to wonder how much longer he should chase after her before deeming it a lost cause. in his eyes however she was the only one and he couldn't imagine anyone changing that

"when," peter questioned sincerely

"according to my calculations," james began. "its only a matter of time."

"so are we talking months? years? life times?" remus taunted

"oh moony quit crushing my dreams," james whined

"its called being realistic," remus answered in a sort of snotty way

sirius patted james on the back, "maybe just take a year off or something, you know to focus on being a better you."

"padfoot thats the most hypocritical advice youve ever given. i love it!" james cheered

peter scrunched his face in confusion as remus shrugged at him just as confused

"really? youd take a whole year off from asking evans out all because sirius suggested it? i dont believe you two," remus groaned

"oh moony, perk up. you love us," sirius teased ruffling up remus's shaggy blonde hair

"sadly," remus muttered. "id be better off if i didnt."

"that, that one hurt." james holding his fake broken heart

"looks like its just the three of us now, you me and pete," sirius fedding into it swinging his arms around james and pete's shoulders to pull them into an awkward side hug. "the only marauders left"

"i almost forgot how dramatic you two are when you're together," remus stated walking in front of them and turning around causing the three to stop in their tracks

"i wish i could forget," pete whispered under his breath

remus laughed at this while sirius smacked pete on the back of the head, not too hard though

"so are you really going to take a year off?" remus raising his eyebrow

"it couldnt hurt," james shrugged. "never know she might miss so much that she approaches me!"

"doubtful," remus mumbled getting a nod out of pete

"or maybe youll find another," sirius cried dramatically pretending to faint

"only you," james joked catching him

"watch it," remus hissed sweeping sirius away from james

"okay okay moony," james held his hands up in defense. "ill find a different black"

"james fleamont potter," sirius growled. "dont you dare."

james smirked at remus who shook his head laughing slightly

"you wouldnt...would you?" remus asked in a very serious tone

"eh nah," james replied. "then you and me might just have to get together and complain about our 'dating a black' problems."

james threw sirius a bigger and more devious smirk as he added, "well write 'the official guide to dating a black' based on our research."

sirius lunged at james tackling him to the ground attempting to tickle his way to victory, the usual way their strolls ended; laughter and a good old fashioned wrestle in the grass

after sirius tapped out letting james bruise his ego they returned back to their dorm to get some sleep before term started the next morning
