Chapter 2

The sun is going down, and I have only gotten five customers today. I sigh as I walk out the door and close up shop. I hated going on the train at night. My store is not in the best area, that’s why I always have Josh around here with me, because sometimes people try to get their hands on young women around here. I always have to keep my guard. My father, well, before the accident used come with me on the train to work. He was always telling me when I was younger to never play on the tracks. For, my brother, I supposed was never told enough to stay off the tracks. I sigh sadly at the thought. Right then I hear footsteps. I gulp as my heart starts to beat faster. Faster. Faster. I stay completely still, hoping the being won’t notice me. I don’t even dare open my eyes to look who it is. I feel someone suddenly put their hands on my shoulders. I was about to swing at them when- “Whoa, whoa! It’s just me!” says a familiar voice. I shift my weight to look strait into the eyes on Josh who stands in front of me with a cocky smile spread across his face. I roll my eyes, letting out a breath of relief. He puts his arm around my shoulder as we walk to the tracks a half mile away. “You freaking scared me,” I tell him, pushing him slightly. “Sorry, sorry,” he says laughing. As we reach the tracks there is a long pause of silence. “You know, my father used to always tell me never to play on these,” I explain, jumping up and down in the middle of the rail rode tracks. “Dude, you’re gonna get yourself killed, get off of there,” he goes attempting at pulling me off the tracks, but I don’t budge. “Hehe, not gonna get me!” I fool, even though I am 18 years old. I still act like a kid, though sometimes. He rolls his eyes at me until we hear a train whistle. I still don’t get off the tracks, smirking at him. “COME AT ME, BRO!” I yell at the train. “Shalette! Get off of there, I’m serious,” he goes, now looking a bit uneasy. I still don’t move as the train blows it’s whistle, getting closer and closer. When it gets a few feet from me I go to walk off the tracks. But something is stopping me from doing it. I’m stuck… “SHAL GET OFF OF THERE!!” exclaims Josh, looking extremely worried now. “I cant! I’m stuck!!! My shoe lace!” I tell him, leaning down panicky, trying to pry my shoe lace out of the tracks. The train is as close as 50 feet away from me and I still can’t get my shoe lace out of the track. Sweat starts to pour down my face, and I’m boiling hot. I swear the train is nearly ten feet away from hitting me when I fling the shoe off, Josh pulling me off of the tracks. We fall down on the ground on top of each other, a panicked mess. When I finally notice the train stopped in front of us, I am relieved to say I lived. I would have gone just like my brother. I would have made the book of accidents that happened in my family.

“You are a freakin’ idiot!” teases Josh, helping me up off the dusty, muddy ground. I just plainly ignore him as we both stomp up the steps on the train. That was close.
